I have shot a few goats there but must be 20 or more yrs ago, down the south end. Have seen pig sign but only on 3 or 4 occasions, never seen one.

I have been told on a few occasions of wild dogs in the area. A friend from work who is also a shooter was camping with his 5yo daughter at Firth Park. He said they just got to sleep when he heard what sounded like a kangaroo bounding through the camp. Then just as he turned the light on in the tent there was was something pressing against the tent above his daughter's face. Which then gave it 5 knuckles and its reply was a yelp.

We had someone walk through our dead end camp in the middle of nowhere in wombat state forest one night.
Didn't have firearms yet either

Have heard some weird stories from other campers of strange blokes in the middle of the night.

I was camping in the north half of Wombat one weekend and at about 2am someone in their 4x4 came FLYING past. Pitch black, bad surfaces, windy down hill corners. I'm amazed we didn't find them wrapped around a tree in the morning. They were going about 70km maybe which mightn't sound like much but for the terrain and visibility it's a miracle they made it out.

No idea what had happened to necessitate such crazy driving as it's not exactly a place you're like to find someone out for a joyride. (Maybe I'm wrong).

Whenever we camp we always find a spot where we can park the vehicle between us and the trail for safety. I had thought maybe we were being overly cautious before this happened.

So anyone been there lately? I'll admit I said I would go again soon, but I haven't really given two thoughts about it.

Tried to convince one of my mates to go back there for some hunting but he isn't sure we have enough firepower for yowies/crazy mineshaft dwelling oldblokes.
Might have to look into a cat D license. Is scared S###less a genuine reason for an SLR and a Spas12?

Went there last weekend (Sep 26th), saw one wallaby and one echidna... Could hear motorbikes all around the place too.
I think there is scarcely any ferals to shoot in there and the ones that are in there, you basically need to be a professional tracker and walk as quietly as the phantom to find them... That last trip is the last time I'll bother going hunting in there again unless I go spotlighting.
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

I haven't been camping/shooting for a while now and have the itch again.

The weather here though

SLR. What I wouldn't give for one of them!!!

Hmmmm, anybody know any aborigine trackers?

On the bright side at least it proves hunting is actually conservation. A method that works.

If only there were more places like it legal to shoot in. I bet Lerderderg is full of vermin!

Any advise on where in the forest is a reasonable spot to sight in rifle before heading out?

Big grey area. No where does it state specifically that it is illegal, but the general consensus is that sighting in appears a lot more like target shooting than hunting.
If you decide to do it, make sure it is somewhere with very clear lines of fire an an excellent backstop.

Would have thought it would be encouraged to avoid bad shot placement on game causing injury

Just be sensible, good back stop, away from people/house, minimum number of shots, avoid shooting on/across tracks or roads. Another words dont attract attention to your self.

That's the one.

There aren't sighting in zones or anything, just choose somewhere sensible.

When I've done it I just find a spot where I'm aiming slightly down hill into an embankment. Safe as houses.

just drive down any track and you will find somewhere good to sight in.
I went for a drive through there the other night and didn't see many ferals, a few bunnies on the way in and out. Lots of wombats, echidna, Roos and wallabies. Next time I'm going to go to where some of the old mills and huts are to see if there's any bunnies in the clearer areas
if you don't get stuck, your not trying hard enough

There are a bunch of old mines in there too I think?

Might be some lurking.

Was a great Sunday - in only 4 to rounds my new red dot sight just failed
Lucky it's got iron sights but a bummer for the trip.

So, what happened?

Not much - the few rounds was to sight in red dot. just died, changed battery - no use. Return job tomorrow.
After that only spotted 2 bunnies but the contrast in the forest was useless with iron sights. So no go.
Definitely go back when have a new unit, pretty good terrain for hunting.
