6.5x55 factory PPU

Post by Cal-ApeR » 15 Mar 2020, 10:08 am

Hi all,

I have had my 6.5x55 Sauer 100 in my safe for about a year. It's only had 20 shots through it. They were factory 139gr PPU and they shot exceptionally well (yes they were filthy).

I have a NSW deer hunt coming up and was thinking that perhaps these pills might be ok to use on Fallow and remote possiblity of a Red.
For those that have used this ammo in 6.5x55, is it too softly loaded to be effective? Is the bullet reliable and would you use it on these species? (Yes i know 270 is minimum for Red in VIC, thank you).

I assume heart/lung shots would be ok. What about bone?

If the feedback is good, i might take it along for something different, if not, I'll go the 30-06 and 243 as my usual backup.

Feedback is appreciated.
I'd rather be hunting

I have owned a Swede before. I have used ppu factory ammo but only in my 243. I think u will be able to use factory ppu in a Swede with confidence on your hunts for those deer

I put a box of the 139 SP PPU thru my Mauser M18 last year and accuracy was pretty good, 2550 fps is more than enough for a Fallow or Red :drinks:

 A lot of deer have been harvested with 30-30 and the like, the PPU should do well. Hand loading in a modern rifle the 6.5x55 is a very good thing. Good luck with your hunt, may your soft points fly straight and true

Hi Mate,
I have been using 6.5 x 55 for 30 yrs, you can just about do anything with this caliber.
Flat shooting, long distance (used for long range competition in northern Europe) , accurate & plenty off horse power.
Very under rated. Perfect for medium sized game.
Generally on a perfect day, neck shot for deer & pigs front shoulder or chest.
Hope this helps
