I've seen a donkey drop on the spot with a .223 BUT in saying that, I'd make the minimum a .243 with a .270 a whole lot better.

Doesn't seem to be a specified one maybe?

I found this if it helps...

Standard Operating Procedure. DON001: Ground shooting of feral donkeys.

Animal welfare considerations
Impact on target animals
• Shooting must be conducted with the appropriate firearms and ammunition and in a manner which aims to cause immediate insensibility and painless death.

For all 6 species included the larger 3 that's correct.

Assuming it's legal, seems to be based on above? .243 with heavy pills would do the job IMO.

Not the .22 in your signature.

Got a centre fire calibre in the safe?

.243/80gr for the small 3 species, .270/130gr for the large 3.
See you on the firing line.

Course you do... Look at the 12g shell... (centrefire)

You could use the 12g to shoot the donkidonks if you really wanted, but I would assume the country is a bit more open than the hills where the Sambar are to be found so the shots would tend to be l-o-n-g-e-r hence the 30 cal would need a bit more go (300winmag?) Though not thick skinned, I would probably grap the 338win mag...

The .270 is relatively meaningless now, without the 2inch case length minimum it brings in all the lo-po rounds 310 cadet, rook, pistol rounds 6.85mm plus providing the projectile mass meets the 130gr minimum... Who would use a cadet on Sambar?

Donkey soup better than donkey-chase.... :D

Not at all a minimum, I'm sure you could use the 223, me, I would be more comfortable grabbing the 338. Better to have too much than not enough...

Like Pawnee said, surely a .308 is more than enough?

If it's taking down big Sambar it'll do a donkey.

I am going donkey shooting at the end of next week and I am a little worried I dont have enough gun. I have a .243 as all I have ever seen is really foxes, roos and goats once. I grabbed some OSA 100g sierra BT rounds that should penetrate more than the standard 87g vmaxs we usually like. Think we will be OK? Headshots should work but honestly in the field I usually try heart lung shots as they are easier on most things. Will the .243 100g be ok for heart-lungs on a donkey?

Although I’m a huge. Fan of the. V max I’m very glad to hear u are considering more suitable projectiles ...when I was in the Kimberly’s we used 303 and 308. Broadside Chest Shots Or front on are the only Shots I would Consider regardless of rifle used ...I remember donkeys were shot at. Longer than usual hunting ranges I think extra care will be required with the 243 ....i nevrr shot donkeys on the water but this time of year it would be potentially successful
