Make a hunting checklist or end up like me...

Post by AusC » 22 Apr 2014, 3:56 pm

I went on a camp/hunt this weekend and did a grand job of forgetting just about everything.

Forgot to take the following.

Knife.
Anything to start a fire.
Took the mattress and no air pump.
Forgot a blanket.
Brought the hoochie, forgot the ropes...

It was all in another bag, not the one I thought it was packed in, due to some miscommunication.

Had to open two tins of food with pliers and basically slept on the cold ground in a sleeping bag with a plastic sheet over me.

Spectacularly miserable night

*sigh*

Have used 1 for yrs. Also have a plastic storage box for all cooking related gear & some basics such as rice, flour, coffee & canned goods. Also keep all of it in 1 corner of the shed so its hard to forget stuff. We would all be buggered if pilots didnt use a check list before take off. Lol

*sigh* yes, I know.

In too much of a rush to get out the door.

Too focused on making sure all the shooting gear was in order than making sure I was in order.

No sympathy expected or deserved

It was ok. Found some rabbit and pig sign. Plenty of deer sign too, found a few well travelled paths and and a few beds. Found 1 small Sambar, heard a big mother over the ridge too but didn't get to him.

There could be room for one more if you're keen for some camping next time... Getting everything in the 4WD is the problem

You got the wheels for some basic off-roading, right? Trying to remember what people were driving at the forum shoot

 Done that before.

I tend to have a sealed box (food/tools/sleep/etc), the swag ready and a backpack exclusively packed for hunting.

Essentially a "Go bag" for emergencies or need to bug out (eg: go hunting!).

Did you even have a flint?

Well that's how I camp....I make kids build shelters out a tarp and ropes made from reeds and they do their cooking in paper bags and tin foil and newspaper - cant see why I have to suffer too!

I can't stand those shows. Such BS. Like you say, there is a stocked crew right there. At any discomfort or misfortune they just turn off the camera and he goes back to camp.

Send him out by himself with a handy-cam for a month or two to do all the stuff he puts. That would be a show.
Good news, everyone!

There is one like that called 'naked and afraid' in the states.

The drop people in some rough place for 3 weeks and leave them to their own. They get a loincloth and they're allowed one item like a knife.

Seriously one though, if you pick a knife you don't get shoes for example. They film themselves at day and camera crew films from hidden locations at night, and will only get involved in a real emergency.

By the end of the 3 weeks the all look like wrecks (as you'd expect). Not plump and warm like BG.

That's serious survival. That would damn hard going.

Doesn't sound like much fun mate, I always make a list with separate categories ie camping gear list, food list, firearms list etc then I just cross em off as they are packed etc, so far its worked out well.

A lot of my camping gear is stored permanently in plastic tubs with lids so it's pretty much a pick up and put in the trailer type deal for me with just a few things that need sorting like blankets and pillows etc and of course food.

"fun" definitely wasn't the word I'd use

The ready to go packs is normally how I do it, more or less.

Just dropped the ball that time.
