There's a lot of good info on Australian releases in "The Hunters Guide" by Col Allison (I've had the book since 1984 & still look at it).

There's also a good article on releases here https://www.wilddeer.net.au/2019/09/30/history-of-sambar/.

Interesting that they started issuing culling permits to farmers in 1901 as they were causing an issue with crops less than 40 years after they were released.

"..it is believed the first release at Mount Sugarloaf took place in 1863. This is an area now located within the Kinglake National Park just to the north of Melbourne in Victoria."
That was 3 deer as one died on the voyage. Further liberations points were near Mount Cole in Western Victoria, down at Wilsons Promontory in South Gippsland, on French Island in Westernport Bay and also Coburg Peninsular in what is now Gurig National Park in the Northern Territory.

Lots of useful information in the article in that link OB
30-06 appears to be the author’s favourite, which coincides with my view. Can’t believe he left out the 7.62x39 however....... ;)

30.06 is very, very popular.
If you read The secrets of sambar Errol Mason he only talks about using 308 or bigger. A lot about bullet construction too. Basically, don't use cheap stuff.
He basically recommends the following. (Bigger is better) Below is not a complete list but will give you a good idea.
30.30 and 7.62x39 don't rank.

Cartridges
308
7x57
270
30.06
7mm mag
35 whelen
338
375h&h
9.3x62
458 nm

Bullets
150gr or bigger

He is wrong when he states that we have a minimum of .270Win or .243Win though, we have neither.

I don't know why he skipped entirely over iron sights with this though "The last and most important item is the scope. No matter how potentially accurate the rifle may be, it will only be as accurate as the scope you select" as if you can't hunt at all unless you have a scope.

I bought two local deer hunters rifles, my Win94 .30-30 and my sporterised M1903/38 8x57mm, neither of them scoped. Scopes do have limitations, as do iron sights - it's nice to have the option of swapping between them to suit the situation.

Yeh, I noticed that. Why they don't just copy the set of tables has got me beat
.

Open sights, I used a peep for a long time. Not a bad option, but a scope beats open sights hands down. IMO

Peep is way better than open for precision, but they can block out too much of the view for me for field use. I think that's why they made ghost rings.
But a scope with water on the lenses, or fogged, or been dropped isn't as good as plain open sights.

There is a reason why open sights are preferred to peeps for quick shots in the bush. Think up close and personal dangerous game rifles.

I think most shooters today way over-scope their rifles for hunting.

When I said peep, I meant big peep. e.g. 4-5 mm.
Well...that's what I used.

Yes, over scoped. Anything like 2-7 or 3-9 is heaps.

That's bordering on criminal animal cruelty.

I think everyone can agree with that. I run variable scopes on all of my rifles that have scopes and they spend more time on the lower end of their mag range than anything else.

I don't find much time to muck around with fancy reticles either. Game don't often sit still for very long

Because Oldbloke is telling people what calibre is an isn't suitable for Sambar, so you would assumed he has hunted them. But I get your scepticism given he asked how I went hunting them, I too doubt he has ever hunted them asking a question like that.

I think he was asking why it's the wrong time of year for sambar. I thought they're out there all the time. Some times of the year they're easier to find and sometimes they're harder, but they are out there.
