That is a disappointing post. Shows your personal distaste not backed by evidence. On all the forums I follow, this one is far the worst for personal attacks. So sad

It seems to me that you are being a little naughty and trying to goad law abiding Mr. Fionn into making an admission of committing an offence in not complying with Victorian regulations on the minimum caliber that may be used on large deer species.

I've shot sambar ranging from 7x57R to 416 Rem mag. Buplet weights from 150 to 400gr. They will all die but the question is how far they Run after getting hit in the boiler room in my limited experience excluding spine, head or neck shots the biggest insurance is the wound channel size.

The 7.63x39 is not going to create he wound channel that a 30-06 pushing a nosler ballistic tips at 2900fps is going to do. Or a 300Win Mag pushing 3000fps or a 308 pushing 2650fps. The bigger the wound channel the bigger the blood trail, the better the hope of finding it if you don't have a deer tracking dog.

.38 Special is legal for sambar in Victoria, so .357 is probably overkill.

My understanding is the minimums for the cartridge are:
Minimum caliber 270
Minimum bullet weight 130 grains
Minimum case length 51 mm

Case length was removed years ago, it only requires a .270" calibre (bullet diameter) and 130gn bullet weight. Bullet design and velocity is irrelevant.

Yep, must have dropped the 2" minimum 6 -7 years ago.
Some say it was because of the winchester short magnums.
But, 270wsm is 53.3mm so is the 300wsm.

But the 243wsm case length is 42.4 mm. Guessing that triggered it. IMO should have just changed the small deer case length to 42.4mm. That would make sense, to me anyway.

Should've done away with the entire regulation and simply refer all hunters to the Animal Welfare Act about not causing undue pain or suffering to animals, that's all we need to know.

God knows how many times I've posted this. Doubt anyone looks at the regulations or the pdf booklets that are provided to download on the gma website?

Perhaps people don't understand regulations/acts do get changed occassionally. They aren't set in stone.

Should all be left up to the shooter as to which of his tools he best thinks is suited to the task. Energy really isn't relevant if the bullet scoots straight through the target.

Mmmm, yes but do my hand loads achieve the minimum?

And I just shot a deer with last of the batch. (So none to test) And the officer thinks they aren't up to the job.

How do you now prove that shot had enough energy?
