Deer mostly in herds or solo?

Post by ployer » 13 May 2014, 9:37 am

Hi guys,

I'm doing some research on deer hunting.

I was under the impressions stags and most deer spend their time solo. Or maybe in twos.

In one of the VIC state forests on the weekend we found lots of deer sign. Droppings, foot prints, 1 bed.

Droppings were reasonably fresh and there was a number of them. I'm no expert tracker and I couldn't say exactly how many where there but it was definitely more than one as far as I could tell.

5,6,7 in the area? That's just a bit of a guess but seems about right to my novice eyes.

Do you guys come across larger herds of them or mostly solo one?

Depends on so many things...

Breeding season or not...

Fawns with them or not...

Google some photos of properties, can be 5 or 6 at a time or 30 or 40 if there is room.

Sambar stags will often be solo as they're trying to define a territory of their own to attract females.

If it's rutting season you might find several does in the area, but not necessarily moving together as a heard.

If it's calving season they'll more often stick together.

Look up information on breeding cycles/seasons for the deer you're after and it will unfold from there for you.

P.S. and make sure it's legal to hunt during those times.

e.g. Hog deer are out of season in VIC during their breeding period.

There are no hard and fast rules for deer!

Every Mob will have different patterns, some will mob up and others will do the solidarity thing even during the breeding cycle. Weird things those deer!

But man do they taste great!

I've seen mobs of 5-6 getting around together near our farm. Haven't got a real good look at them. Usually pick them up at a fair distance while out spotlighting.
