Dogs at camp during hunting

Post by ployer » 23 May 2014, 4:12 pm

Hi guys,

I'm getting into camping, hunting etc. and want to take the dogs out for them to have some fun too.

I'm not talking about deer stalking with hounds. Just taking them for fun/company.

During the actual hunting they'll be tied up at camp (with enough rope to explore plenty).

Is this likely to cause any problems hunting?

Is a deer, pig, goat likely to smell a dog from a mile off and head in another direction?

Anything like that?

Cheers.

I'd say at worst a deer or any other animal may get spooked by a new scent. So tie up the dogs downwind .

Maybe go easy on the hugs too so they don't get their smell over you to.

I dunno about for hunting, but I know I can smell it for ages after the dogs have laid across my lap for a while.

If I can smell it a deer surely can.

If your dogs are happy to be tethered and not break free looking for you or tie each other up that should be fine.

Our dogs get caged or locked in the car if they get left at camp because they want to follow along and will chew through ropes to get free. They will happily rest in the car though.

As for the smell of the dogs I wouldn't worry because any hand will smell you anyway if you're upwind.

Now, some pics of the dogs ;)

Mine's fine at camp. Tied on a 40m rope so she can explore while we're gone for an hour or two.

Just tied so she can't cross the rope over the fireplace.

Other than that all good.

Thanks fellas.

They're not chewers so getting through a rope wouldn't be a problem.

Good tip not letting them cross the rope with the campfire though

Another tip...

Buying a beef shin bone and cutting/snapping it in half is $5 well spent to keep the dog busy for a couple of hours ;)

Mine are ok as long as there is enough to keep em busy.

Shade and water too so they can have a snooze in the heat and not stress.

Yep. Get the butcher to cut 'em in half and they'll spend ages on the marrow.
