Sambar deer near Foster Vic?

Post by ToddG » 26 May 2014, 1:48 pm

Hey guys,

Been lurking for a little while but decided to take the plunge.

I'm from the Morno Peninsula and I've been looking pretty seriously at buying a decent sized acreage within 3-4 hours drive.

Preferably east of Melbourne.

Found a couple of nice size pieces of land just out of Foster.

I know there is hog deer down along the coast there but was just wondering if there is sambar in the hills around foster?

Or is it a bit to far south for them?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Mate,

I think there was to be some good hunting around Foster on Snake Island there a while back. But they canned the plans for it.

Not received well by the public/council down there I think.

Plenty of places within a few hours drive of that though.

Is it just Sambar you're after?

Welcome Todd,

To clarify, you looking to buy a proper with deer on it to hunt on? You might look at raising your own herd if that's what the property is for, which makes location a bit less critical.

Or having a property near deer hunting locations? Plenty of spots in driving range like scrolllock said. But you'd be driving north for them.

Hey Todd,

There is Strzelecki State Forest there which is what you're referring to I guess?

I don't know of many people hunting there? (Just my feedback, not an expert in the area).

I suspect it is a bit too far south, for large numbers of deer anyway.

North you have the much denser forests of course. All the state forests around Bunyip, Baw Baw, Marysville, Thompson, Lake Eildon... The list goes on.

Not quite the answer to your question, but had a look at any properties around Mansfield?

Just north of the above mentions places by VIChunter.
See you on the firing line.

Anywhere surrounding Mansfield is good.

Lots of blokes doing good hunting up that way.

I had a mate who took deer hunting parties each weekend to areas around Dargo. Further east than Foster, but I haven't heard of much in the way of deer around here. I'd have thought it'd be too cold.

If you are looking to breed up your own herd, I know of a couple of great guys up in the Shepparton area who breed large number with great success.

Breeds them for hunting himself or selling them off to butchers?

Having your own private herd on call for hunting would be nice

Bit of a late reply. Haha.

Thanks for all the answers.

Nah was just wondering if there is a wild population there.

Thought it would be a bit of a bonus.

Have been looking at property around eildon and Mansfield and further East as well.

If you breed up your own without fencing get Fallow because they will stay around the area more if you feed them well . Samba could just all run off to a better spot .

Hi Todd,
I am in Langwarrin not too far from where you live. I moved to Victoria 5 years ago hoping to harvest my first deer but sadly have not managed to get 1 yet. This have been a childhood dream of mine yet to fulfil.
Seen a few, spooked a few and the only time I managed to take a shot, I missed...

Been down to Foster once and seen a few deer signs and spotted one behind a fence. They are there.

I am having difficulty finding a place to sight in my rifles and little river seems to be the only place available to public for this. Do you know of any place I can go sight in and have a little practice anywhere closer to home?
Cheers

N/E Vic...about April onwards...preferably with snow on the ground...and then you stalk all day and don't see jack s**t...so be it.
Browning BL-22 lever action...open sights
T3 Varmint .204 Ruger...Meopta Meostar 4-16X44
T3 Lite .30-06 Sprg...Aimpoint Hunter 1X red dot

....that will do me

You can zero your rifle in the State Forest mate.

Just find somewhere suitable/safe and set up a paper target.

(Shooting trees will rub Parks staff the wrong way, set up on a logged stump or with a standing targets against a dirt backdrop.
