Canada / US camo in the Australian bush

Post by pucker » 27 May 2014, 9:25 am

G'day,

I'm looking to pick up a camo outfit but notice all the patterns are of Canadian and American forestry?

Maple trees, no gum trees...

That's what I've seen anyway.

Does anyone do Aussie bush camo? Or does it not matter?

Multicam mate, works well. And obviously Auscam, if you haven't looked at it already. It was made to suit our environment.

If you're thinking more Realtree types of camo I've found APG works best for where I go.

As I understand it the exact colour and shape doesn't really matter.

If the wood is a bit off or the leaf colour is different etc.

It's more about breaking up the pattern so your shirt isn't a big T-shape warning sign in the bushes to animals.

I was just think anything other than that north american style forest camo really.

We've got dry brown Australia or in some of the wetter areas rich green Australia. So much of the camo on shelves is neither of those things.

Yep, breaking up solid colours.

Same for straight lines which is why guys use camo wrap on their barrels.

Most stuff you'd be hunting is colour blind anyway, right?

Deer, dogs... goats, pigs? Not sure about the last 2?

The main purpose is to break up our outline/silhouette and solid colors plus shiny surfaces, like reflection from face, neck, arms hands etc.

We are the only ones walking upright, well most of the time through the bush and therefore easily recognized as a threat. Most animals see in shades of grey, i.e. monochrome or black and white.

I also notice that the Canadians and Americans wear Blaze Orange as part of the hunting clothing and think this may be rule/law. How many of us wear a Blaze Orange piece of clothing when hunting?

And the rest of the colours.

Orange, blue, pink. Assuming all these hunting clothing people know what there doing it doesn't looking like it makes bugger all difference what the colour is.

It's law for hunting in NSW isn't it?

I think part of their R license a hat or vest in "approved blaze orange" or something as a requirement.

Yeah, so I've noticed, particularly with the winter and snow camo. Think I'll pass on the pink - not that there's anything wrong with pink, just no snow up this way.

A set of camo gear I'd like to try is the Australian Navy uniform. I think that would go well in our bush. Anyone know a sailor?

I'd like to see more of the Blaze Orange worn by us in the bush, mainly from a safety point of view. Could keep the "antis" of our backs and give them one less thing to whinge about.

Agreed on the safety point. Always have the blaze orange hat on when I'm out.

Wouldn't bank on it doing anything for the anti's though. You just can't please some people...

That's Stoney Creek we're talking about now I think? I've got one of their catalogues here with the pink and blue stuff.

Not saying it doesn't work, but I suspect it's aimed a little more at fashion than function. Aimed at getting the girls involved I think.
