E Scouting + Hunt Planning Sambar

Post by vichunter90 » 16 Apr 2024, 3:32 am

Pretty new to hunting Sambar but looking for input into e-scouting and planning a hunt around it...

I'm currently using google earth and topo maps to mark up the following:
-First light faces/areas
-Saddles/Funnels
-Creeks/Streams
-Clearings
-Vantage/Glassing Points
-General Access

What other resources should I be looking into?

And how should I be approaching the hunt? Low at first light into the wind before the thermals switch then hunt from above?

Any tips/input would be greatly appreciated!

I would buy a book called mapping for trophy bucks.

Then do the ADA education course.

Agree, doing the course is a good option. I've heard good things about it.

Secrets of Sambar, Vol 1 is a good option too. Vol 2 & 3 not as good in my opinion.

A lot to learn and a lot of effort to be successful on sambar. Many toss it in after 2-3 years.

You can over think it I knew a bloke about 20 years ago and he had only ever shot rabbits and fox's with a 22 and shotgun .

anyway he asked me how to go about shooting a sambar I told him to buy a howa 308 and get comfortable hitting a bread and butter plate at 50y then go hunt one in an area I sent him and be buggered he did it in one week he was stoked it was only 20" but he was happy as and just 15 mins from the car .

That he is .
All he does now is drive around North of bairnsdale looking for a long gully whith a few feeder gullys and hunts there and the arsey bugger wins more than he loses the man is a freak and he still uses the same 308 looks like its been dragged up a dirt read behind a car .
