Sighting in for Sambar hunting

Hi guys,

One for the deer hunters here.

What distance do you sight in at when hunting Sambar?

I know some guys do forests and some are open areas, but rule of thumb stuff?

100, 200, 300? What's most common?

I am a great fan of Nick Harveys point blank range tables. They are in the back of all his reloading manuals.

Sight your gun in to get the longest distance you can when aiming dead on the target. Use the 4 inch table for Sambar.

Most calibers get you out to 300 or so which means a little hold over for the longer shots on them spooky buggers.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

Sighting in for 200 metre is pretty standard.

With your average .308 sighting in at 200m you'll be hitting about 1.5" high at 100, bulleye at 200 and 3" low at 300.

For something the size of a Sambar you can pretty much aim 'as normal' and still hit the boiler room across the whole range.

Just one way... to each their own though.

There is always the option of a holdover scope of some sort (if you haven't bought your scope yet).

There are a couple which let you zero at 100m then have rough guide for 200m and 300m for .308. Might be some other calibres, but making for .308 is the one I've seen. Common hunting cartridge obviously.

Or get Mil-Dot, or a Horus reticle, or whatever option you like.
