Shot placement - bum through to chest

Post by gherx » 18 Jul 2014, 2:47 pm

G'day,

One for the more experienced hunters than me (all of you probably )

A side shot to the hind area, gut shots etc. all bad as no vitals there. I know this.

If you come up behind at animal at a distance though and are looking straight down him, would that still be an acceptable shot to take for humane hunting?

Say pigs and deer size, deer hunting minimal calibre here in Victoria is a .270 win. Would a shot to the rear with a .270 and up go far enough through to hit some vitals for a humane kill or is there too much in the way?

I haven't done it, just asking.

The only time that I would consider this would be if I was using a very powerful gun with non-fragmenting projectiles

Ideally no.

As I'm sure you know hunting bullets are typically designed to mushroom as fast as possible to dump all their energy into the animal for an effective kill.

This still happens whether you hit bone or muscle (or bum and everything therein). For something like a deer there is just too much between the bum and the vitals to have any chance of hitting the heart area unless you're shooting something ridiculous that will turn the animal inside out regardless of where you hit it.

For .270, 7mm-08, .308 and all the rest of the common, sensible stuff they just won't go through three feet of junk to hit the vitals.

Yep.

The animal will go down (how would you got with a 30 cal up the back side) but it won't be a clean kill.

A follow up shot for sure and maybe a chase to finish it off.

Forgot to say, distance will play a big part too.

The further your shooting the less energy still with the bullet of course to penetrate the target.

This will show you what I'm saying now, but you'll see you'd blow a big chunk out of its ass before the damage tapers down to a point a foot later.

Well before the vitals.
