Best value bullets

Post by joojoobeans » 24 Jul 2014, 10:41 am

Hi everyone,

New forum member here and pretty new to shooting as well.

Doing my reloading homework and working out some costs.

Bullet price varies a lot, huh? What do you guys think is the best value bullet?

I'd like to get 1 target load and 1 hunting load. Still deciding on rifles as well but looking at a .308 if we can talk about those bullets for now.

Thanks for the answers :)

I use Nosler Custom comp 168gr in my target 308 load. I buy them by the 1000 and I think last time they were about $330 so 33c per projectile. There's cheaper projectiles out there but these shoot really well because they have pretty tight tolerances. I batched the whole thousand and found .4gr total variance throughout
.177, .22lr, .22-250R, 2x .308W, .30-30W, 7.62x54r, 8x56r, 9x19, .357 Mag, 12GA

Sierra 155gr HPBT Palma Match for the 7.62 Full Bore load. Nice bullets, used them for years and they've done me good. 42 cents each.
Woodleigh 150gr Weldcore for Hunting. $38 a box of 50. 76 cents each so too expensive for vermin control but a great hunt bullet.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

I reckon Sierra are pretty tough to be on price. And for good bullets.

Berger are pretty good price for match and hunting VLD bullets.

They don't seem to work for everyone for some reason, but work great (accuracy I'm talking about) for those they do.

Some bullet prices depend on fluctuations of the Dollar (Sierra is one example) but a lot depends on the volume you purchase and what sort of a deal you can get so if you have choosen your bullet type discuss the options with you LGS as you may get a deal with other inclusions such as primers, brass etc. This is the way I tend to purchase in bulk.

To add to my previous post.

Try some 130gr Speer Varmint Hollow Points for the vermin control.

Yeh the Speer packaging makes me laugh as well. not really a varmint bullet that''s for sure but they are hell on pigs. Federal now use them in their 308 130 gr loads and are the preferred ammo for aerial pig culling with the NSW NPWS I believe. Ran some through my 30/06 with 51gr of 2206 and man....they are savage

I've found hornady SST pretty accurate and good for hunting, also Speer hot cores are really good hunting bullet and are fairly cheep.

SST was a great round in my Ruger .308.

I tried a dozen bullets working up my loads for it and it was the top 1 or 2.
