Introducing dogs to guns

Post by scrolllock » 13 Aug 2014, 3:48 pm

G'day all,

Getting ahead of myself here but when I get my dog, is there a trick to introducing him to shooting?

The first shot will scare the s**t out of him to start I'm sure.

Obviously they get used to it over time, but don't want to go to fast or traumatise the poor little bugger either.

Tips?

I can get that far by myself.

I'm worried Schnauzer will be scared by Mauser's loud bark

Some coonhound pups can be gun shy. Ive had a few that were so i will throw out fire crackers while they are eating. A dog will jump at first but after a few times they just ignore it, they more worried about gobbling up their dinner. After they get used to that I take them out in the yard with a lead strap on and shoot the 22 rifle. I do know this from the old timers never shoot around a gun shy dog unless he has a lead strap on unless you want the dog to take off for the hills. A few times with the rifle deal in the yard and they are usually over their fear of gunfire.

It definitely did for mine the first time I took her camping.

I planned to take her some distance away behind a bit of foliage etc. to muffle the shots of a mate and introduce her slowly by moving closer to the noise.

Bit of a miscommunication though and I was only about 10m behind him when he fired a shot. She shat her shelf as expected and sprinted to between my legs for cover.

Moved off to a distance after that though and did as planned. She was very focused on the first shots but got used to it pretty quickly as we got closer.

Now she pretty much knows to stay at a reasonable distance for the sake of her ears, and I make sure to keep her at a distance also if expecting to fire. She trails along about 15m from me.

Would be a nice idea if fireworks weren't illegal here... *sigh*

Maybe fire some primed brass for a little bang? Would be about the same as a fire cracker?

Just an idea, check that that's legal to be doing in case you scare the s**t your neighbours and get in trouble

The firecrackers an idea... I'll have to find a substitute but I'm sure I can work something out.

Some kind of intro without the mixup should work too Lorgar, thanks

12g or centerfire with primers only, then .22lr or a very light load .

No shotty here, but centrefire with primers only I could do.

This will be one to work on in the state forest thought I think.

Not something I'll try with the neighbours around
