Hunting with 30-06 in Australia?

Post by remnt » 23 Sep 2013, 7:32 pm

I have a .223 which I don't use much as I prefer my .243.

It's about time to sell the .223 and I think get a larger calibre rifle as my "cover-all" for hunting. I want to get something that will me a lifetime so don't wan't to under do it. Don't want to go overboard either though obviously...

Will a 30-06 cover hunting everything in Australia?

300 win mag is obviously next one up but if I can avoid the extra recoil that would be preferred.

Anything that a 30-06 won't handle here in Aus?

Cheers.

30-06 is suitable for hunting anything in Australia.

Goats, pigs, deer... It will take the lot no problems.

Definitely enough gun, no need for a 300 win mag IMO.

300 win magnum isn't an enormous step up from the 30-06.

if you can shoot a 30-06 without worry you should be able to handle a 300 win mag no problems I would say.

No reason to subject yourself to needless recoil though. 30-06 will what's required for the OP and be friendlier on the shoulder.
See you on the firing line.

I've made the same choice - only got the 30-06
I found this to be very powerful ( I hunt for meat) and go for the head shot
You will need to set this up so you can take off the scope very easily and use it as a scrub gun and for a long shot with the scope
I owned 7600 in 308 and almost every hunt needed to follow a blood trail, to find wounded pig. Not any moor.
30-06 also has large variety for projectiles - from 100 gr to 180 gr.
I'm using 168 gr and when hunting goats - the head shot is a must, other ways there will be nothing to clean.
I was very surprised how easy it was to place a perfect head shot at 50 yards with an open site.
