Taping your muzzle for the bush

Post by wayward » 03 Sep 2014, 8:29 am

Hi guys,

Is it worth taping your muzzle when moving through the bush?

Is a twig or something likely to get up there eventually?

What's the worst that can happen if it does?

Thanks.

Its not a bad idea. I tend to do this in rain and snow. Small piece of sticky tape over the top stops the rain but I sometimes forget to replace it after the shot

I've never bothered.

Hunting in VIC bush... wet ferns, twiggy branches etc. I'm pretty conscious of keeping my barrel down though or clear or brush when moving through it so nothing can fall in.

Only time I'd check is if I dropped it in water or mud or something which could have run down the muzzle during. Haven't dropped it so far though.

To be sure, to be sure. Its a common practice and seems to have no effect on accuracy. The air in front of the projectile blows the hole in the tape.
Rubbish in the barrel is a damage and safety issue.

There's always the old condom and rubber band trick ;)

Put to good use for years by the American army.

That's my usual method, he he.

The thing that prompted my think was I actually did slip over for the first time the other week on a sheet of rock suddenly gave way.

My rifle was flat across my chest but you never know next time.

I'll give tape a go for a while and see if it's not too annoying to put on and off.

Oh, should I be able to shoot through the tape if a shot presented itself or should I remove it first?

I expect the air pressure from the approaching bullet would remove the tape pretty much immediately.

I wonder if the bullet even hits it actually... Just thinking out loud there.

I can't see it having any effect at all for hunting.

Just to be clear though... I'm strictly speaking of tap outsize the barrel. By the time the projectile hits the tape it's clear of the barrel so can't be jammed by it. A barrel obstruction is a serious concern though. Anything finding it's way inside the barrel - even just a little - I would not fire with.

If you're concerned just don't use layers of electrical tape or anything thick/tacky.

A bit of that paper masking tape will remove easy and pose no problem for the projie.
