.300blk for fallow deer

Post by NukeBOMB88 » 17 Oct 2014, 7:16 pm

Hey guys,

I've been looking at getting a deer rifle for awhile now. I know that a .308 would be ideal , but the property I'd be shooting on isn't large and in any case I don't like the idea of using too long range a calibre anyway. Would a .300blk be a possible alternative? It has less range ( So I won't accidentally shoot the neighbours  ) and I'd imagine it'd take a fallow deer down. Anyway, what do you guys think? Is it a good idea?

Why not get a 308 and reload to conserative velocity with a round nose prijectile. You have the best of both worlds then.

A .243 will do for fallow deer…well that's the legal requirement for Vic. I'm a bit wary of that .300 blk for some reason. I'd stick to the tried and true calibers if I was you.
Browning BL-22 lever action...open sights
T3 Varmint .204 Ruger...Meopta Meostar 4-16X44
T3 Lite .30-06 Sprg...Aimpoint Hunter 1X red dot

....that will do me

300blk may not be legal. Looks like a very short case and I think the 243 is basically a necked down 308. Correct me if im wrong.

It will actually be legal for fallow in Vic with changed laws September 2012 with a calibre restriction and projectile weight minimum but not a case length restriction:

Apart from legality the other consideration is humane killing of the deer. The 300AAC is a slightly downloaded 30-30 which has been killing small deer for a long time. It will get the job done at short ranges. For myself I would choose 308 or 30-30 every time over the 300 but that is the beauty of individual choice.

Thanks for the input guys, it looks like I might go for the .308 . I guess I'll just have to be super careful of what's in the background when I shoot :)

Being super careful of what's behind your target is always the only option anyway, I've hunted for 15 years always know what's behind my target, don't shoot over crests etc, 999,999 times out of a million you may be lucky if your not careful but that one time you could regret it

Yeah I reackon you might be right, checking what's behind what your shooting at seems like a much better idea than restricting the range of your gun :)
