I don't think there is an all round hunting rifle for Australia but if one was close I would think a 243 but then you get into
bigger game like buffalo then I think 7mm or 300 cal although there are other calibers that will do the job hence there is no
exact caliber for hunting I think that you would need two rifles or even three a shot gun because i'd hate to try and shoot ducks out of
the sky with a 243 can be done but i'm not good enough

no shortage of ammo plenty of shot, sinkers , forks , coins, wire , nuts and bolts , there would be an item for every
animal in Australia

Myself personally i lile the idea of a rifle with the ability to top the mag up without removing the mag stainless and either a synthetic stock or laminate. I love my Sako 85 varmint it has proven itself many times pigs, foxes rabits 243 seems to do the job with ease.

Took the marlin 1895 sbl 45-70 loved the way it shouldered and enabled me to get those quick follow up shots when in the scrub.

Personally I dont have a issue with varmint rifles for hunting they never seen to bother me. However I am 6'6 and 125 kg. I do have a howa 1500 308 with a sporter barrel coming hopefully by the end of the week that will become my partner in crime for hunting.

I have a aimpoint red dot on the 45-70 recoil aint bad ive found that once youve reloaded a few the factory stuff feels like its half charged. My go to load is nosler 300gr bt on 55gr of ar2207 that kicks a tad. Absolute destroys anything it touches. I managed to smash a pig at probably 175m maybe 200 comes down to practice that was resting against a tree but can easily shoot out to 150m no dramas.

howa 308 sounds like a good thing AZZA, be curious to hear how your howa checks out. looking at your rifle list it should fill out your collection nicely. not suprised about factory 45-70 being underloaded. 6.5 swede and 8x57 mauser are victims of that too. mate was there much left of the pig after being hit with 300 grain ? wouldn't mind a 45-70 myself

The 40 kg one i got didnt fare to well. The great thing with the 45-70 it doesn't discriminate with shot placement i have some ftx loads to test out next time i go out should do well.

And yes the 308 is the last rifle to travel to my safe i have thoughts about a 204 ruger every now and then but my 223 will mulch things with the 55gr vmax so kind of not necessary. But never say never.

If you could only have one firearm, this would be a damn good choice to make. A combination rifle/shotgun would probably be best. Thankfully it hasnt come to that.

I'm itching to pick up my 22wmr / 410 as soon as the PTA comes through......

If a light weight you can usually fill the stock behind the recoil pad with lead shot. Will help with recoil.

I own a Browning XBolt Speed, nice gun no problems with it,
But i wished i stayed with the Tikka t3, these actions are soooo smooth and also the tikka is very very accurate and it was also cheaper than the browning.

Probably a combo of some sort. 12G and 308Win will cover 99.9% of anything.

i think the general term 'all rounder' in actual rifle terms really not practical in Aus. For varminting, yes a heavy barreled rifle, and hence higher rifle weight works well, but sucks to carry round such a heavy rifle in them steep and rugged hills deer stalking, where i always take my Rem Model 700 titanium ultra light weight which makes the going so much more comfortable.

Never have enough guns for the various criters ya hunt in my view. Besides, having an 'all rounder' not as much fun as having more specific suited to the criters and terrain.

Ultimate for me would be a Sako Bavarian carbine fullwood in 6.5x55 with 20 inch barrel but for crawling through the scrub and fast handling 7600 police in 308 10 shot mag synthetic pistol grip and light scope.

There is no such things as a best all round hunting rifle.

The Accuracy International AT or Barret MRAD would be good IMO as they allow calibre changes with quick change barrels, expensive to buy yet saves money on optics.

I could only have one... I'm going the double barrel 12 gauge shotgun for its all round versatility.

From delicate bird shot to the big SG stuff, slugs and improvised rounds such as broken tempered glass, rock salt, grain etc.

But then again a shotgun isn't a rifle.

Perhaps even a combination gun?
12 gauge / .223 would be handy.

If it's got to be a RIFLE and ONLY for hunting then I'd go a .223 because I mainly shoot rabbits, cats, foxes, roos, goats.

There's a good reason golfers head out with a big bag full of clubs.
