Bringing firearms on planes, what sort of case is required?

Game hunting and large prey. Deer stalking, hunting with hounds. Boar, pigs etc., large prey, culling, hunting large feral animals.

Bringing firearms on planes, what sort of case is required?

Post by MrClark » 01 Dec 2014, 4:35 am

G'day everyone i was just wondering what sort of case for rifles would be required for bringing firearms on planes for interstate hunting trips?
Particularly from WA to VIC.

Would a lockable Pelican case be sufficient?

I Looked into it a little and the bolt must be out and ammo seperate, you can aparently throw the ammo in another bag (not carry on) but what constitutes an approved case?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

My guess would be that , yes a pelican case would be perfect. Best to contact the airline you intend to fly with to confirm. If my memory is correct , they will prob ask you to check in a fair bit earlier than the rest of the passengers also.

Given the drama's they create over nail scissors and such, I'd be wanting something in writing as to what they require exactly.

Preferably actual confirmation as to your intended packing, (you could email them a photograph). At the very least a printout of the airlines requirements that you are trying to meet. It could also be worth having an existing paper trail regarding bringing a firearm to the airport.
Verbal advice is only worth as much as the paper it isn't written on (name, time of conversation still turns into "I never said that").

Just my view, I've never actually transported a firearm by air.

Just ring the airline concerned and they will tell you what's required, I suspect a lockable case, no ammo etc etc but one way to find out for sure and that's ring them.

as far as ammo goes, just read a few airlines policies and 5kg of ammo seems to be ok.

would have to check with particular carrier on their limits and how to pack and declare it etc

I've got a mate who works over here from Wangaratta so around that area i guess, im not a full bottle on Vic, but somewhere around Wangaratta and Mansfield mate.

He's the bastard who told me to buy a .338WM for sambar, then after i got it he said "oh yeah a .308 will do it no worrys" the Bastard!!

Turns out the rifle didnt suit me...... And it kicked the piss out of me hahaha, so .300 WM it is.

Where bouts in Vic are you mate?

Some good deer territory in the forests around Mansfield.

If your mate has a few spots I reckon you're in for a good trip :)

.338WM for Sambar though

Give him a slap on the back of the head for that.
