Trophies from Canada and the US

Post by huccl » 01 Dec 2014, 3:23 pm

Does anyone know, are there any barriers in bringing in game trophies to Australia from the US or from Canada if one did a hunting trip there?

I've read a lot of people having big problems getting trophies back from Africa, but seems mostly due to dodgy bastards on the other end.

Anyone brought anything back from either of the above 2 locales?

I bought a Black Bear back from Canada many years ago. Had a few problems.....It was some shonky stuff at this end in customs.

They basically deleted some of the address lines in the postage so it just gave my name, town and state. Word I got was that someone in the customs department liked the item. I got a hush hush call from bloke that worked there and he suggested I get there quick and ID myself otherwise the item becomes unclaimed due to lack of address and it's "up for grabs".

I don't think much of that stuff happens these days but track your item is my advice.

6 foot Canadian fella, head mount in rug, shot with a 30/06 up in the Peace River near Fort St John, BC. You gotta go there...blow your mind.

All I do will be legal of course, nothing like that.

Some prize size deer is more what I'm thinking (hoping) about :)

They'll tell ya.

Skipping ahead, anything legal you bring back I think they just take and irradiate to kill any bugs and you pick it up a few weeks later.

Costs you $100 or something to get it done.

Whatever you do don't try and wing it once you're over there.

The old forum had a few guys lose their trophies doing it on the fly because they couldn't get it sorted once back in Aus and out of reach of their trophies.

Some dodgy bastard on the other end got some nice freebies.

From what I've read the problems from Africa are due to criminal/corruption problems.

Not something you'd expect from Canada, just the required import permits.

Probably less these days, but can you imagine the amount of stuff that's gone walkabout over the years from the various seizure and storage organisations on this stuff.

Must me massive.

Been there and back yet :drinks:

I wouldnt go to North America for the purpose of hunting deer, especially considering we have just as many species here... except some interesting ones like Reindeer.... I would as a side to a bear hunting trip!!!

I believe all/most the NA deer species are not listed by CITES (<Check here>) but have a check if you can export a trophy / can with permit / absolutely cant...

Bear in NA (north of mexico) are generally available with permit, White bears in Canada too($$$/v.restricted)
