How far will you take a head shot at on game

How far?

I know this will vary with skill and confidence levels but curious what others feel is their limit.

Lets say an average 'game-size' head which is... Size of a football?

How far for you?

At 70m aiming at ears for drop, finally saw and scored the elusive mini black bunny this evening.

My Rotty almost swallowed it whole it was so small :s

*Thats a 22lr case for scale. Size of a rat.

For me it depends on the target, what rifle I'm using and the weather. In ideal conditions I've nailed foxes between the eyes out to 300yds with a .17 Remington and Skips out to 500yds with a .338 Lap but in less than ideal situations I'll play safe and go for the chest. I prefer a good clean kill over a brag shot or possible miss / wound every time.

Rabbits head at 110m with subsonic .22's? Does that count?

But it was with my metallic silhouette .22 and same ammo so I had clicks to 100m. Wouldn't do it without the confidence I could make the shot.

On the same basis I would take a head shot in a pig or goat with my 7-08 of a solid rest at 385m (turkey distance) where I'm confident I could click up to within a group of 2-3" off the bench

100 metres max.....and that is with the benefit of a 'dead rest' at a deer sized head. (With my .308 btw)

Really do not see the 'benefit' of having this discussion though......make me understand why this is important

If you must have a reason I suspect Nick is interested to see how his skills compare to other hunters.

More to the point though... It's a forum, you know, for discussions :P

Go back to your TV if you don't want conversation

On game I honestly never try.

I load 140gr pills behind a heavy-ish load of powder in my 7mm-08. A boiler room shot is always easier, safer, and damage is more than enough. There is no need to try a head shot to stroke my ego, I'd rather just aim for the easier target of the chest and know I'm going to hit it.

On rabbits though which is about your target size... Off the bipod I'll comfortably do 200m shots, freehand I wouldn't normally shoot further than 50m? That's at 'the rabbit' not its head, so about your target size.

I mostly head shoot when Roo culling (with Permit of course) and I practice for it. My current rifles for the job are Sako's in 22/250 and 243 both with 12power quality Austrian Scopes and I can consistently shoot 60mm groups with both of these rifles at 150 meters out the ute window, at night with a spotlight and my diesel Landcruiser running.
I can estimate that distance pretty well and will not head shoot past it. I don't like wasting ammo and I am only interested in a clean kill.
I find the 60mm to be about the limit for an average Roo head. Outside that and I start to get jaw, nose ear etc hits....not desirable.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?
