Hunting the Otways

Post by Oldbloke » 18 Jan 2015, 8:16 am

About 60% of the Otways are now national park but that still leaves a large area where you can hunt. I often hear there are , sambar, fallow , reds, goats and pigs down there. But I have had the odd trip and found bugger all. Does anyone have any first hand knowlege or had success? Not looking for specific (secret) spots just general info or tips. Distance wise its not too bad for me and some nice camping in the area.

Same as you I'm afraid.

Tales of deer being in there from old mate at the LGS but not seen anything myself in two trips.

Admittedly it was a good year or two since I have been.

I don't know about the hunting there but it's beautiful looking forest.

Plenty of waterways and falls Google shows doing a search. Relaxing place to spend a few days camping at least :)

Deer can be found right through the Otways.
I know Red Sambar and Fallow can be found in the right spots.
A friends dairy farm has deer on a weekly basis in the back paddocks and has done for 15 years.
In one spot a weekend farmer feeds them, mobs of a few dozen can be seen on his property every day, they dont allow shooting and back onto Nat Park.
Cheers.

I'm been on the phone with Parks Victoria and DEPI to understand where is permitted hunting in the Otways and no one can give me a clear answer.
Trying to find out what is marked as a state forest in the area, can any one assist? Thanks for your help.

You can't hunt national park.
You can hunt in state Forrest or
Forrest park..
Buy a map.

Heaps of deer through the Otways, it's just super hard to hunt the state forests because of the density of vegetation. And getting onto private land is near impossible because a lot of Melbourne greenies have moved down there, especially east of Aire River.
I've been trying for years to find good private land (door knocking) but no luck. But always see the deer coming out grazing by the GOR.. anyone got any pointers on finding good property?

Same issue here. You need to marry the farmers daughter. Lol Finally have some time so just hunting in the Forrest. As you say, most areas fairly thick. So, not easy. I've seen a few fellow but still unable to get a bit of lead into one.
