Shooting on private property run in

Post by rigatoni » 17 Oct 2013, 10:38 am

Looking for a bit of advice on covering myself when shooting on private property.

A mate of mine has a property in north Victoria that I shoot on. I have his permission obviously, and sometimes I let myself onto the land and go roaming about to take care of a few foxes or rabbits.

Last trip our I bumped into his neighbour who waved me over from a distance. He said they suspected a few people may have been shooting on properties in the area without permission. They'd found odd brass or dead predators and so on.

It was all civil and everything, no real problems, but he seemed a bit sus on me being like he was testing the waters with his conversation if you know what I mean.

I dunno really. Don't want to rock the boat with the locals or cause grief for my mate. Just thought I'd ask... Any advice?

what do you mean by 'covering yourself'. - from the neighbor or the land owner?
I always sms the land owners before I pop in unexpectedly. That way they know.

Poachers will often do a runner when they see someone else shooting on the property. I've seen this before.

Not sure there is really any advice to give here?

As long as you have permission from the property owner you're completely within your rights to be and shoot there.

Not that it's really the neighbours business, but it wouldn't hurt to have a letter of permission in case you have have to explain it to someone who does matter, like the po po.

Letter of permission is only good to put in your filing cabinet.
I dont carry letters of permission around with me. Heck, I hardly even have letters of permission. The farmers I know work on a gentlemans word....

Doesn't hurt to cover your bases though.

You never know, you could have a falling out with someone or something to cast doubt on whether or not you had permission at a particular time. A letter just clears up any doubt.

The neighbour was only doing what I would expect my neighbour to do and I would do for them. I think once you and your vehicle are know it won't be an issue.

I was using my brothers new ute in the bush cutting wood recently and had a neighbour pop over for a look.

But you are right, If it is a big property or the owner isn't on site it wouldn't hurt to have their number handy and/or a letter. Usually a cop will pick up straight away you are genuine and if you aren't he has your rego.

It is surprising who notices you in an area that seems deserted.

Looking out for each other is good.

Bit of a fine line between that and sticking your nose where it doesn't belong sometimes I find though...

I can appreciate that. When I said it wasn't any of their business I didn't mean to say be an a**hole to them.

Might be bringing a bit of personal baggage to this... Sick of a few neighbours of mine who can't mind their own business...

I know where you are coming from, to avoid this I try to keep dealings on a practical level and don't delve into their private life nor interfere in their decisions unless it directly effects me. I don't pop around for a cuppa either.

In S.A. it's law. Not saying I agree totally, but it doesn't hurt anything.
Written permission, Hunting on your Lic., Hunting permit.
I try to cover myself as much as possible, have been approached several times and being a SSAA member can help when explaining
that you have insurance cover.
A couple of guys tried to bluff me off a property one day, helps to know as much as you can, and having the owners phone number
on me there and then, had them back pedaling pretty quick.

It's our sport, we need to look after it.

i deal with poachers on a regulsr basis at onr of my properties they tend to run when a vehicle heads there way.
as for the "covering yourself" I sms the owner and if i ever get confronted by a neighbour a worker etc i just call him.
a smaller property i have i seem to get a bit of police focus (im sure a neighbour keeps ringing em) but the property owners usually see them first heading down the driveway and clear it all up

I'm doing the same these days TPCKRT.

I did end up getting little letter penned which I keep in the shooting backpack, but also take out the phone now so I can call if need be.

The neighbour seems to be minding his own business now anyway :)

if you want to stop the cops from bothering you/the land owner, just ring them before you get there, say who you are and on what property you will be on, have a bit of a chat, get the guy you talk to's name ,use this if you still get the cops calling, ie: hi officer, didn't peter/john tell you that i would be shooting here today? problem solved. 8-)

I know what you mean. I've got 1 miserable SOD of a neighbour who can't help but try and make everyones life miserable...

Going back to Monty's original comment "As long as you have permission from the property owner you're completely within your rights to be and shoot there."

I think I'd leave it at that rigatoni. You've got you're letter now, if anyone gives you grief just say you have permission and be on your way.

"nothing to hide, nothing to fear" is the expression right? No need to spend all day satisfying the neighbour when you're in the right.

If the cops come calling, you're covered.

You could look at it as an opportunity to add the neighbours place to your list, of course if they hate each other, maybe not.

I think if you turn up wearing a Kermit the frog outfit and carrying a rifle there won't be a conversation with the neighbours... Immediate call to the Police instead

Had a similar thing happen to me a few years back, I was leaving the property when the neighbour spotted me and came over as there had been some thefts about the area anyway I told him the property owners name and where he was (he was on holidays) and he soon realised it was ok and I gave him my name and said to call the owner whilst I was here - he never worried about it as he could tell I was legit as he knew the owner was away also.
