Any recommendations?

Required range wouldn't be more than half a km I wouldn't thing but the problem is more going to be hills and terrain here in Victoria.

I have a pair of these:

They have been fine so far.
I have been meaning to get a couple of headsets for awhile to make hunting with them more practical.

Apparently using radios is unethical, dunno why, I would have thought uhf radios were a safety device, helps to not lose your buddies.

The improper and illegal use of vehicles, radiotracking collars and other electronic devices such as two-way radios is considered to be highly unethical and is inconsistent with the concept of 'fair chase'.

I have an icom and it's a great little unit. I also have the headset and boom mike. Helps keep your hands free.

You won't go far wrong with Icom gear, higher initial outlay but you're buying the best.

I've got a pair of cheap Uniden I got a few years back.

Can't fault them inside a few hundred metres, but haven't tried further.

Icom make great compact little units which are still powerful.

Unless you're surrounded by particularly unforgiving terrain of metals/stone I doubt you'll ever lose contact.

From what (little) I've seen of VIC state forests there isn't much that would set them wrong.
