This is why I usually hunt by myself.

I read another story that he was shot with a .270

I think someone should go to specsavers.

It always amazes me when I read these types of stories - how the hell do you confuse a human for a bloody deer? They really need to learn to identify what it is they are about to shoot, as the police officer said, no trophy is worth the risk.

I imagine a bit of blaze orange would have helped there. Or a bit of target identification!

The guy is extremely lucky.

That said, the language the article uses it so over blown.

"Horrific wounds"
"shot him in the back"
"the gaping, bloody wound it left"
"Bloody wound: Grisly photographs"

He has about a 4"x 1" gash on his back judging by the pixelated photo. Not something you'd shrug off definitely, but the article seems like its working very hard to suggest he got shot 'front and centre' in the back and was on deaths door.

Yep, very nasty, to say the least. Orange or red hat is a good option but at the end of the day is far from a guarantee.

Maybe re think all the camo gear if you hunt in areas where others are. I've hunted with up to 3 blokes but we ALWAYS know where each of us is, particularly in thick scrub like they apparently were. I might crossing that "mate" off my list of hunting cronies.

Lucky to be alive.

Blaze orange is the go... Though I remember something about a similar accident in NSW I think a year or two back?

The guy was wearing orange but his buddy saw a deer cause he wanted to see a deer. So they say.

I still prefer to hunt by myself despite the risks associated with that practise. Copping a .30 cal bullet in the guts would ruin the day.

Red or orange caps or vests are good, I always wear one. But they arnt made of kevlar. Normal safety rules still apply. And hunting alone doesnt guarantee anything. Another hunter could be over the next crest. I dpnt recall the stats but if I recall correctly hunting is safer than a heap of other sports, just look at boating and fishing.

If your hunting together stay together...always. Two or so bloke walking walking around in the same area will .30 cal rifles is a recipe for disaster unless they can see each other. If you lose sight of your mates don't take a shot...no matter how tempting. Time and time again it happens in Australia and NZ.....and no one learns.

I hunt with a friend and we separate but it's made crystal clear what area the other person will be in and what directions are safe or not to fire in.

We use a track or ridge as a marker and take a side each, whatever makes sense at the time and no shots are taken at all towards their half of our decided zone.
