Hog deer...anyone one hunted them?

Post by North East » 01 May 2015, 2:30 pm

I've seen them while fishing the Gippsland Lakes many years ago....funny little things. But have never been in the ballot to hunt them.

So has anyone here had a go? Probably a 1,000,000 to 1 chance of getting selected in the Blond Bay ballot and have noticed that people from all over Australia come to hunt them.

I figure I would just use my .30-06 loaded with 130gn projectiles, might be over kill but I'm not going to buy another rifle for them with the hunting season being so short.

So who has hunted them?

So I guess no one has hunted them? Never mind I'm going to name in the ring for Blond Bay ballot later this year.

The season there is only 28 days isn't it?

But Sambar is all year round? Nobody can be bothered with the smaller ones maybe.

Yep...very short season...and it's no free for all...strict regulations apply.

As for Sambar it can take a year or more to get one.

They're different looking all right.

They remind me of giant looking rabbits sort of.

Too smaller seasons, fewer places to hunt, better prizes elsewhere all year round.

Never appealed frankly.

Maybe they don't have the prestige of a big Sambar but I bet they taste as good ;)
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?
