Pyrites state forest is NOT a state forest

Post by joker » 28 Jun 2015, 9:10 pm

so thought i would write a brief report on the day and help anyone else from making the same mistake as me lol

I started the day very excited to get out there and have my first hunting/shooting experience. The Norinco .22 was packed with a target and location was picked so i was ready to go and rock n roll.

I headed out to Pyrites state forest as the name suggest its a state forest so i thought how i could i possibly go wrong. Driving down Hobbs rd i noticed alot of fencing off and residence so i kept driving as i wanted to see a sign stating im in pyrites state forest before i started shooting just for that bit of extra security. I ended up driving all the way around the forest and jumped on walsh rd which by the maps calculations took me to the heart of the forest so it would be my safest option to make a start to ensure that im in the right location with no residence.

As we were where driving further and further into the forest i was getting excited as i knew the beginning of a new chapter is soon to begin, but little did i know it was coming more to an end then a beginning. I finially seen a sign in the distance and as i get closer it read something like this "lerderderg state park pyrite". You can imagine my facial reaction was something along the lines of these  :o :( :x felt like i went through all the emotions except for happy lol

turns out that it might be called a state forest but it really isn't   government must of gotten a kick out of the idea to just to confuse people on purpose then have an excuse to fine them

Well either way i must admit it was a nice place and just went for a drive inside which has a good track for the car to drive on

after that we ended up in baccus march some how and just headed home, maybe next time ill be able to experience the shooting/hunting

Hope you all had a good weekend  :drinks:

As Lorgar suggests if on Vic use the forest explorer website. Zoom Onondaga the area of onterest then use the layers tool ( icon has blue red green layers with Letter I on right) to click on the area you are interested in. The information bar to right of map will then tell you if true state forest or otherwise.

yeah the 'i' with them colours works only when im zoomed out and click on it.

although my main issue is when i zoom in to have a better look at the boundaries i lose that light green color to show its a state forest. but when i zoom out it comes back

So the sign is correct, 'Pyrete Range' is within the 'park'....
There doesnt appear to be any such state forest known as Pyrite or Pyrete, I know it must be hard to believe... but google is wrong

Google and Whereis maps both have it as "Forest" I have sent Google a message, would be good if a few people could let them know its wrong so someone dont make a mistake and start shooting in there.

You don't need State Forrest. Any public land will do. Don't be deterred because somewhere says deer habitat etc. If you aren't spot lighting that is.
You can still sight in a rifle.
Any crown land not occupied under licence (company growing trees or what ever) as per the Game Management Authority maps via the DEPI.

Explained and linked in the following small sample of topics ( found using the search box top left of screen ) covering all this:
