So the sign is correct, 'Pyrete Range' is within the 'park'....
There doesnt appear to be any such state forest known as Pyrite or Pyrete, I know it must be hard to believe... but google is wrong

Google and Whereis maps both have it as "Forest" I have sent Google a message, would be good if a few people could let them know its wrong so someone dont make a mistake and start shooting in there.

You don't need State Forrest. Any public land will do. Don't be deterred because somewhere says deer habitat etc. If you aren't spot lighting that is.
You can still sight in a rifle.
Any crown land not occupied under licence (company growing trees or what ever) as per the Game Management Authority maps via the DEPI.

Explained and linked in the following small sample of topics ( found using the search box top left of screen ) covering all this:

Hey NE,

These are the topics that get covered once a fortnight that if one STICKY THREAD per state and territory were done then it would save people mucking around trying to find the info.

I come across a quite dry on these topics because they have been covered extensively repeatedly.

MODS/ADMIN - Useful Sticky Threads Please.
Even if only to direct people to the source material and dispel BS myths and opinions on what sounds right vs what is.

Good one, you've used the power of gogle to delete the Lerderderg State Park while the erroneously named 'Pyrite state forest' remains!
May as well get the state government the update their maps!

Lerdererg State Park backs onto Wombat State Forest, the road going in from Gisbourne is the bordeline then it snakes into Wombat. I just came back from a hunting trip in Wombat, we had to be very careful we didn't cross over into Lerdererg accidentally and get caught with firearms. As for sighting in, it's a bit of a grey area. I used to shoot up in Toolangi at a well known old wood cutting site. We got pretty regular there and got the rangers number, rang everytime we went up and put signs saying we were 'legally' shooting and the best way to approach us. And one time someone rang the cops, a 'concerned resident'. Anyways apparently it is illegal to target shoot/sight in on crown land in Victoria.

To do "target shooting" or anything that resembles a shooting range, your right.

I can say with 99% confidence (just don't have the info handy to quote) that you can sight in.

I can't remember if it was in the safety book or Vic police website, Act or where, but the meat of it is that to ensure ethical hunting sighting in is permitted to ensure accurate, humane shots and not end up with any wounded animals because someone couldn't confirm their sighting before a trip.

a year and a half ago I could google Wombat State Forest, have it come up in G maps and the parks info page with info on hunting. A few weeks ago only Lerdererg will appear on G maps and the start of of the Wombat 4WD track. Can't get the park info pages either. It's as if the Gov. doesn't want us to.
