Hunting whereabouts in Victoria

Post by bosi72 » 06 Jul 2015, 9:53 am

Hi all,

How do you exactly know whereabouts are you allowed to hunt in Victoria, especially when in the forest?

I decided to share my way. Nothing fancy, no rocket science, all you need is Android phone, CustomMaps free app from Google Playstore, and Depi maps converted from pdf's into kmz format.

It was very anoying when I hunt at the edge of the maps, then had to open map index, then another pdf, etc.. So I merged 4 pdf maps to be able to see more. I will post the conversion process a bit later.

Not sure if I violate any copyrights here however I dont earn a single $ from this.

I was able to see maps on my old iPhone 4 using Map Plus free app from App Store and kmz maps, however with poor performances.

Let me know how you go.

Good hunting!

Good on you mate.

It can be hard to work out where some of the lines on the map between hunting and no-hunting areas is if your not familiar with it.

Great for guys exploring territory for the first time I'm sure.

Erp, maybe I won't.

I Googled to see the KMZ format is for google maps, must need to only open from your phone with the app?

Doesn't seem to be a way I can see to open them on PC Google maps.

@Member-Deleted sorry havent been hunting there yet. that map was 'cut' by a friend, however it is always a good idea to familiarise with the area prior getting there. i will write instructions soon so hopefully some of you guys will cut maps yourself and share.

@ausc i normally carry all my stuff on the phone, then when in the forest i see if and where i can hunt. i believe there are some pc apps that can read kmz, however for you i put mitta bright jpeg here https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz-8ibSafyz0dDBzZzZjVTJVMjQ/view?usp=sharing
you realise there wont be any geo lat/lon data in jpg...

cheers

I prefer just to print something off the Eastern Victorian Deer Hunting Maps.

http://www.gma.vic.gov.au/hunting/deer/ ... n-victoria

A lot clearer than mucking around with an IPhone. It you can hunt deer you can hunt anything except for certain areas and these are marked.

you cant have maps clearer than this as they are created exactly from the same website.
i must admit i struggle to see much when pdf maps are printed on a4 color, even a3 wont give much details, but then the trouble are joining maps when you are positioned in the corner of the map (murphy)?
dont get me wrong, i do carry paper maps and compas in my bag, but i didnt find them helpful at 6am in unknown forest.
nobody should fully rely on these maps, i also use (paid) hema maps so i can see where i drove, left things, walked, spotted the animal, etc..
everyone has its own way, i share my way which may not be the best one, but does the job for me.
happy hunting

It's all cool mate....I just prefer not to use an IPhone. I know the bush I hunt in, rarely use a map, I know the legal areas and rarely get the SatNav out.

But carry a PLB in case it all goes to s**t.

...give man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach man how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime...

as promised in my first post, here are the instructions on how to make the maps.

it's a ~30 steps document enabling you to merge and create any maps from gma/depi web site. the same process would work from any other pdf map.

I just tested, downloaded then opened kmz in Google Earth for PC and it works great.. e.g. you can see the elevation, 3-d projection and all other fancy things that comes with GE !
