Pigs with a 204?

Post by Oldbloke » 18 Jul 2015, 7:57 pm

I just read a story in the SSAA Australian Shooter. The guy is shooting foxes and pigs with a 204, presumably with the same load. Look like chest shots. Decent sized pigs too. Is this common? I would have thought the projeciles would be on the light side. Any comments, makes me think the 223 might be a fair pig caliber.

Not the first choice cal wise for pigs but if that's all ya got it will do the job if you shoot em in the right spot (Head/neck) my mates taken quite a few with the 204 now. Those ACP Projies would no doubt do a great job on em.

I've heard of the 204 being used on Sambar too (NSW) to good effect (dropped it on the spot) seen it used on other deer too with 1 shot kills so I guess it punches above it's weight so to speak.

Also heard of it being used on Bears too, seen Coyotes droped at 500yds I think it was (1 shot dead on the spot)

I know of farmers killing pigs with .22lr and .223 is quite capable, so i would assume .204 would also do the job.

It would come down to the right shot at the right range.

Though .204 does have velocity on its side

Such a cliche, but hit anything in the right spot and it'll drop..
Seen plenty of pigs whopped with a 22LR and a 22-250 smacks em around as well...
Just use whatever is in your paws and aim straight

Many people over the years have asked "What is the best rifle to shoot pigs with ?"

The simple answer is "Whatever you have in your hands at the time".

My partners son regularly drops pigs with a .223, and never failed yet for a clean kill.

Over many years, the humble old .22 rf has dropped countless pigs.

I found a clip on Youtube last year that demonstrated (some yanks) dropping young feral pigs from a hide,,,
and they were using a gas powered air rifle.
Straight in or just under the ear, and they dropped stone dead with just the back leg twitching.

So yep, correct range, correct spot, and accurate shot, can produce spectacular results.

I am however a strong advocate for using accepted and recommended calibers when going after specific quarry.

I got 3 about a week and a half ago with 55 grain soft point .223, dropped them pretty quick. Pretty balanced calibre and it is very capable.

I'll be reluctant to shoot pigs with my .204. More of a rabbit, fox and dog caliber. Happily use my .30-06 though.

I was a bit suprised. 204 is usually loaded with about 40 gr projectiles.

My mate Maxy and his son Whyatt sorting out a few pigs whilst out chasing foxes with the 204 - she's all about shot placement when it comes to small cals, if you aren't up to it don't do it, that simple really.
