Does anyone have a comment on a suitable calibre for camels?

I knew a grazier over in WA that used to shoot them all the time with a 270 Winchester, they went down every time. The thing is they are big solid animals and you do need something that will put them down hard. Due the open country they inhabit there will be times you won't be able to get real close so something that can hit hard out to a reasonable range up to 300m is ideal. A 300win mag with 180gn bullets would do it. The best shot is right behind the foreleg, through the ribs. Head shots and neck shots are a problem because they are constantly moving. If you shoot one approach it carefully then put another in for insurance. IF it gets up it will be bloody cranky. Bull camels in the mating season can be particularly aggressive.

Did the research on camel shooting a while back, in the link below you'll find just about everything you want to know. There's a link to a pdf in the second link with a guide of where to hit them and other useful information.

Personally I'm planning to hit them with the 50 BMG :) ,I spoke to the government fellas in S.A and it's legal for me to bring a 50 into the State. A relative has 20,000 acres and access to another 30,000 just north of Ceduna. Only thing stopping me is getting the time off work :(

During the plagues in the late 2000's in the Southern NT anything with power above 308 gave best results.

Expensive when shooting several thousand. But we need to be harvesting over 100,000 a year just to keep up with the natural increase.

Yes, but then you'd have to bring along your Apache chopper.

You can shoot as many as you like mate, they are very destructive and there's roughly 600,000 of them in the Western Australian and South Australian deserts. They know down fences, push over windmills and water tanks. They also trample young Mulga trees to get to the new shoots in the top branches. I've travelled a lot in camel country and it's a good idea to keep a rifle handy. They'll come right into your camp if the mood takes them.

Camels are easy to get close to, a 300wm is more than enoughgun.

I've spent time around Alice and other areas through the Tanimi, the cammels through there are so dopey that you can drive within 30 mtrs of them before they move off and they don't start bolting untill you shoot.

When licensing rifles in wa, you have to justify the rifle by listing what you will use that calibre for .wapol will approve .303 up for camels, and .303 is proven to be quite effective against them. .300wm will quite definitely be enough gun, unless you're shooting at stupid ranges

6.5x55? Great cartridge. I'd have one if the 270 didn't get jealous.

I was on a cattle station out on the western end of the Gunbarrel Highway once and the owner was showing me around. We came over a sandhill and there were bleached bones everywhere, it looked like a dinosaurs graveyard. He told me he had come there late one afternoon and surprised a mob of camels. He kept shooting until his ammo ran out. He never did count how many were shot. The homestead was an hour away over a lot of sand ridges, and after that he carried a lot more ammo. There were some other blokes on another station along the Canning Stock Route who shot camels for pet meat. One of the stockmen on the station went off to work with a S&W 44mag on his hip. He's ride long on his ag bike and shoot camels with the handgun.

The Swede is a good enough hunting cartridge. Won't take the heavier pills like a 180gr which the .308 (which seems to be the benchmark for all things hunting) will but at the 130gr-140gr end it's only slightly behind in terms of energy.

Can't comment on camels, but as far as the cartridge itself goes anything you can do with a .308, .270, 7mm-08 etc. you can do with a Swede.
