Well there ya go anti gun people say that guns do nothing for them but you have proven otherwise to us
Good story and what a buzz it must have been for you shakes and all
I think most of us have had an episode similar to that at some stage of our shooting life i think thats what keeps us doing it

often a bark or a cough will pull them up just long enough to take the shot,

these shooting sticks are very affordable as well as easy to have with you for these times
I have perfected the drop to the knee and take the shot with these, I rate them very highly

I do a lot of uphill, sticks are just not practical and an unnecessary weight. Different shooting position is of course always an option, but that's all benifits of hindsight.

Couldn't help but laugh at the first comment of those sticks:
"Damn things sound like a skeleton having a wank in a biscuit tin, rattle your knuckles when trying to set them up, fill the ferrules full of crud, and would be generally more use for buttering hedgehogs than a shooting aid . . ."

I bought 2 sets delivered from the US for $100 a couple of years ago, at the moment you can get them off ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BIPOD-Shooting- ... 0543462465
if you bought 2 pairs like I did $136 delivered
they do rattle when assembling them just like the comment says LOL but in use they don't make any noise
how I use them is to pull the legs back and hold them on the stock, then let the legs go as I am getting on my knee for the shot
they are pretty handy for bush stalking quick shots and no shake, they weigh the same as two bits of fark all
since having them I have made myself a set with 1 piece legs out of 1 meter long 10mm carbon fibre rod

Went out again yesterday (had RDO) to one of my usual forests to try and bag a fox or two. Was in there for about 5 hours total, saw nothing...
Could smell fox at about three different locations and found plenty of scat but nothing came to the call all day. Is this a bad time of year for calling?

BFscott will know better than me but, I think yes. Generally winter is slow. Should pick up about December.
I don't worry about it, still see the odd one. Foxes are more interested in mating/breeding during winter.

can be but walking creeks and bullrushes and scrub can weed them and cats out easily enough. theyre less likely to come to a whistle but they still need to pee poo and eat and drink.

"theyre less likely to come to a whistle but they still need to pee poo and eat and drink."

Correct, and that's what's puzzles me. Why not come into the whistle? :unknown:

They're paired up through the winter and more interested in loving than eating so although they still have to eat they may not feed as regularly or may be more cautious to get around in daylight hours, males like to stay close to their ladies and can be less inclined to come to the whistle, spring becomes more productive.....in saying that though I've had multiple pairs come in to the whistle on the odd occasion, other (most) times they'll leg it full pace without looking back as soon as you let a call out.

This is just my observation over the years, so I could be way off, but allot of animals whether they be mammals, reptiles, birds or fish behave this way during the breeding season, where they'll feed less frequently, change diet preferences or even shut down from feeding completely, they also become more cautious and on edge.

I had 2 shagging in the middle of the road about a mth back, we'd been out spotlighting the night before, seen SFA and as luck would have it here I am driving home after picking the daughter up from work and come across 2 knotted in the middle of the road, one was trying to run one way and the other the other direction which was never going to work for them anyway one has more pull in it and managed too drag the other one in it's direction

Also out camping about 6wks ago and each night we heard barking and each morning around 5am I'd stick my head out of the swag and sure enough there were foxes wandering by, even surprised 3 one morning but sadly no firearms with me on this trip :unknown:

My first successful state forest hunt, looking for fallow deer sign but forest only seems to hold roos and a healthy population of rabbits, was some old goat sign(piles of dry s**t on the fire trails) and very little pig sign, still be a nice place to camp for some early morning bunnies, seems an established area with warrens under piles of old fenceposts and rubble.

this little fellow looked to be in pretty good condition all things considered. shot at about 60yrds with the BRNO fox 2 .222 with hand load 50gr SP

pretty fun hunting, flush them out of cover and track with the scope on lower power hoping they stop, will take the .22 next time though and try to get some to eat.

Sounds like a nice spot mate, shame you didn't smack em in the head, still you could take the back legs and make a good feed out of that.
