Wombat state forest

Post by joker » 14 Sep 2015, 10:43 am

I Firstly just wanted to say that I think we need a new topic for posts. Instead of hunting we need one that says walking

So with that little ray of sunshine that we seen on the weekend I decided to seize the day and go for a shoot. I ended up at wombat state forest again simply for the convince of the location.

After we arrived there we started the day with going for a hike in the bush, hoping to get lucky and spot something but that didn't happen lol.

We did see a few joeys bouncing around, but that's about it

We then just done some target shooting and called it a day.

Honestly I don't go there with any hopes of actually finding anything but more for target shooting.

Although I would be one of the main contributers to the jar

Honestly I go wombat more for target shooting, with the hope of something trotting along to me.

Hopefully next time, I'll go for the sole purpose to hunt.

If any one can clarify something for me, is it legal to set up my own target in the state forest?

What's the legal distance you have to been from the perimiter of private property while shooting in a state park

I don't think there is a distance from a property line?

Obviously just can't shoot into it, across it, or towards it without a safe backdrop.

Signs of animal life are in abundance but most I've seen is the joeys birds and a dead wombat while I was driving there.

I seen some marks on a tree that looked like deers antlers but not an expert to be hundred percent

Yeah that's my grammaticall error mate, I did mean state forest not 'state park'

I use a .22 with subsonic rounds so it's no were near as loud although I guess I have to be more cautious about target shooting. It's just that it's much more convenient to go Wombat then to the range but not much of an option now is there.

Thanks for the reply. Cheers

That question was on here not to long ago, I think you can sight in so you can kill cleanly but cant set up for the day just plinking at targets all day.

If anything I'll try to ensure that I go out deep enough into the forest, so that I don't disturb any ones dwelling.

I Don't mind going to the range, although the serenity of being in the forest makes it so much enjoyable.

That's what I remember too. You can put up a target to sight in but can't set up a "range".

I wondered the same thing about the same forest! And been anecdotally told that it's not allowed, but I am yet to see this documented somewhere.

Just spoke to SSAA and they say its not written but it is a law :unknown: you can sight in a rifle but not setting up of target for plinking all day, very grey.

*sigh* that's really annoying.

So what if I do go target shooting on what grounds are they going to fine you on? They can't just make unofficial laws and standards.

If you get a chance have a look at Victorian firearms act 1996 10(2)(ii)

It states that "applicant must engage in sport or target shooting only a place which is authorized by or under This Act as a place at which sport or target shooting category a or b may take place".

This is in reference more to the reason for obtaining your license

Like I said anecdotal, I have not seen any hard evidence or documents to suggest anything.

Sighting in a rifle is ambiguous.
