Sambar sign and tips

Thought I would start a new discussion on Sambar sign. Just to help new starters.

Some breeds yes, some no.

Sambar obviously as the topic shows. Fallow don't. Can't remember others off the top of my head.

@oldbloke what is that material on the barrel - is it purely for camouflage or serves another purpose?

Just a bit of cammo material, only for that purpose. Straight glossy sticks are not very common in the bush

Close up of a rub tree with shavings around the base...this rub tree is most probably from a fallow buck though not a sambar

I've not seen fresh deer rubs but I've seen some rubs from pigs that started ankle high and came up a tree to about waist high, clearly a very large boar.

Hoping to get down to snowies again this year but yet to see a Sambar where we go.

Some fresher sambar scat, size and shape varies depending on age of sambar, small for yearlings, larger for mature sambar

Centre of picture. I know they are about. Yet to catch them on my trail camera!

Thing about Sambar rubs, is that Sambar has a pretty big roaming radius and don't hang out near the rub. It's good to find, to confirm that they are around, but even if you find a fresh rub, the culprit could be kilometres away.
