Hunting around Bunyip

Post by juststarting » 09 Jan 2016, 1:00 am

Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on hunting (rabbits, foxes?) around Bunyip, on public land?

Cheers

Hi. Bunyip is a state park. You need to go north of it into state forest to legally hunt pests. Yarra state forest to north - towards powelltown and targo to the east. Saying that I have gone out many times, issues are terrain is very heavy and steep. Unless your prepared to set up close range to burrows or tracks it's hard to range any of them. Also unless you stick to .22lr there are plenty of areas where it can be difficult to see where your round will end up.

Apologies. I sounds have been more specific, I was thinking first around Targo. Will be taking a 17HMR. Terrain may be an issue. I was hoping to drive in and then hike to find a clearance and practice with my fox whistle...

If you use a combination of google satellite and state forest explorer you can find old logging coups which are more open.
Just don't shoot the Bunyips - there aren't many left!

The state forest explorer is most useful for checking if an area is state forest, versus state park or heritage park or national park. Zoom in on an area and use the layer tool (i with a blue, pink, green layered icon), and click on an area of map.
The text pane on the right will tell you what sort of area it is.

I just had a look at Google Earth and it seems like there are a lot of open areas to go bunny sniping. Then there is a random isolated island, so to speak; and 500m exclusion zones around some, but not all roads. It would be useful if DPI actually clearly labeled some of those roads, but... Government department...

The map looks useful. Also never hurts to have a map of the area, anyway.

I wonder, does it cover area between Powelltown to Piedmont; +/- 4-10km either side of the Yarra-Junction Noojee Road? The map description is not clear, it seems to lean west. However, most of the state forest is east of Powelltown (west seems to have a lot of private land). And does it cover Latrobe SF, again, not clear from the map description.

For maps, I have found the Melb Map Centre very good. You can choose which map you want (1:50 000 gives enough detail which covering a decent area) and then order.
This is the link to the large scale map of vic that allows you to zoom in and choose individual 1:50 000 maps:
http://www.melbmap.com.au/site/pdfs/vic ... _index.pdf

So your area of interested would be covered by Neerim 8022S in the 1:50 000 topographic series.

The rooftop map series all overlap. So yes you can get coverage of those areas. They clearly mark state forest roads and tracks as well as boundaries. Very good if you couple this with gps.

Places I looked at were very thick. But I didn't know what I was doing on top of that so you know, learning experience but that's about it.
