You are about to enter into a lifestyle that will burn deep into your soul and contaminate your blood with un-explainable emotions. This lifestyle reduces grown men to tears and makes them as excited as children, makes your heart race, your blood turn cold, your mouth go dry, your stomach jump, swim and tighten into balls. Reduces your bank account, makes your mind wander off, and in extreme cases has been know to totally relax even the most anal of people. It also causes shortness of breath, uncontrollable shaking of limbs, dryness of eyes and excessive sweating. Not to mention pain in the lower back and feet, strained necks and sunburst skin. It also creates an awareness like nothing you have ever experienced and a tranquil calm over mind body and soul that can not be explained, but once experienced is completely and utterly addictive.

yep, foxes are a problem but it would be a sad day if there were none left to shoot. I don't mind the idea of using wild dogs to control foxes, although the farmers hate the idea, but so long as there is some type of canine predator to hunt and kill me be a happy boy.

I've done alot of hunting using quite a few different 2 wheel drive cars, just know its limits and get out and check ahead if in doubt.
Just finished 3 days hunting and all I used was a mazda 323, was parked right in the middle of deer action and got onto 7 sambar all up

Yeah, I know, :zombie:

But I randomly decided to click the link at the bottom of another thread to look at this chart and it's all wrong.

For example, compare .308 vs .30-06 for starters...

You'd have to be a ****** inhumane shooter to use a .22 on a pig. Hopefully you were just joking

Thanks for that HH.

Yes. I was say that while there is no minimum for pigs, you are best to start hunting rabbits at your mate's place with a 22lr before progressing to bigger game and heavier hitting rifles.

Plenty of vids on YouTube of pigs being shot around feeders with 22WMR, would not be my first choice but can still be done humanely with headshots only at short ranges.

22LR has been used by military forces around the world for sniping.... indeed current use by (though I highly disagree an object) by Israeli forces ..... to kill mostly teenage protesters... but thats another story.

On pigs? if thats all you've got... :unknown:

So tomek... how did you go through the year mate?

Did you get a gun and get out there? Would love to hear what you got and what you shot and where? Is your Yaris still alive?

Give us an update

Re: Considering hunting but unsure if it is worthwhile

Post by Tomek » 01 Jan 2017, 11:05 am

Haha I've done so so.

I got my CZ455 gun and it's a dud IMO but perhaps marginally within specs. It may even be ok for hunting as it shoots accurately mainly when cold. I will go to the range at least one more time to zero the scope properly for the ammo I plan to use (I've been focusing on groupings mostly and trying different ammo which changes the zero). Still, my rifle is both very fussy and inconsistent as the ammo the shop tested it with and worked perfectly, works crap for me and other shooters on the range (same box so maybe they didn't test it honestly). Other ammo works alright but it's still annoying. There's still the option of contacting CZ/Winchester or just getting a new gun, (Lithgow or Anschutz).

The good news is I have 2 people with farms lined up who will let me shoot there so when I feel confident I won't just be leaving a trail of disfigured rabbits in my wake, I'll go and try my luck :) I've got all the gear I need though. Bi-pod, gun sock, gun sling, rangefinder, hunting and filleting knives and eski. Also some headlights if I wanna try my luck at night. If I can succesfully get some rabbits in my belly, I plan to get some tanning supplies to try use the rest of the animals.

Hopefully I can post some pics of rabbits that I've shot and cooked in the next few months :)

The Yaris is fine although I've come close to rocking in a fetal position due to my rifle being crappy. My GF looks forward to the outdoor trips, and tanning the fur but needs to experience the bloody parts a few times to become comfortable with that. Same goes for me but I am prepared and mentally accepting of the realities of eating meat.

Good to see you are still around Tomek. I have only joined this forum and since posting on this thread, I have seen you have started a new thread re: your new CZ 455. Shame to hear that you are having problems

I am in a similar boat to you Tomek. Just got my license last year and .22 although I have the Zastava .22lr. Cheap but good. I found alot of variation between different ammo but as it turns out the cheap ammo (sK) works best - BONUS!

Also just purchased a .243 Howa 1500 and plan to find goats in State Forests - also only have a 2wd.

Maybe I will see you around the Springvale range sometime. I plan to make shooting a focus this year cos last year didn't get much time.

Lucky you to have found a couple of farms to shoot from... that's ideal  ...Did you ever get out to scouting some S.F's?
