Which style of fox whistle is the best?

Post by Tomek » 07 May 2016, 2:11 pm

I've seen so many fox whistle varieties. Tenterfield, the harmonica looking one, tubular ones and button styles. But I haven't found any information on which ones are best. What do you guys think?

The best fox whistle is the one you have in your pocket at the time.

I've used the tin button whistles, drilled out 12g brass bases, crimped .22lr shells, reed calls as well as electronic calls and they all work Just get a couple and give them a go, some seem to work better on different days than others..

I have a few different types of whistles and callers. How well one works depends on the location. If the button whistle isn't working I switch to the tenterfield. If that isn't working I'll switch to the quakin shaker. In areas where there are hares the shaker works best.

I'm going to get the original as well. Seems a bit better for up close, also another style of call so it could increase the chances.

I use Tenterfields, penny whistles, tin whistles, bombala whistles, scotch predator callers and my Fox Pro, and polystyrofoam, they all work at diff times, I just go with whatever and give it a run and try diff things until a fox is silly enough to show up, then it's bang flop time! :D

I've got the Fox blaster, tenterfield and the button type. Called in foxes with each of them. For me it comes down to how broad an area I'm trying to call to. If I think there might be a fox in the immediate area where I am I will use the little button one, if im trying to call far and wide then I go the tenterfield.

G'Day

Don't limit yourself to a whistle.

I have found that some Fox's (particularly ones that have had the odd angry shot fired at them and got away) can become wary of the whistle that most use, I have looked at other sounds that inspire the curiosity of a Fox, such as the sound of a frog in distress. Yep recordings of several different species of (naturally) distressed frog's have been tried, all to good effect after the trusty whistle had been tried and had failed.. Just suggesting that it doesn't hurt to think outside of the box... A buddy used to use a recorded rooster crow to good effect.. Curiosity Killed The Fox..!

Cheers

I also like my Fox Pro Shockwave - seems to work well on em too as well as cats and crows and fmd bloody kangaroos and cattle too  The great thing about E callers is they fox is focused on that and not you with the whistle which sometimes they will spot you move and they are gonsky not an issue with the foxpro and a decoy in action, they are totally focused on it so you don't have to rush a shot like sometimes with the whistle.

From memory these came into the Fox Pro, I watched the black panther come in from around 300 odd mtrs away, slowly stalking it's way in and down into a washout before popping it's head up to have a look. The Grey one came of the side of a mountain and disappeared down a gully for around a min or so before emerging from behind some blackberry bushes (stuck it's head around and it was good night soon after.

Here's something different, I was out calling up a few feral dogs the other day using a latex mouth call (NO! not one of those) and a fox came running up to see what was the go. Either I've got to improve on the dog howling or the fox has a problem. Didn't shoot, was more interested in the dogs but Foxy hung around for quiet awhile..

Hi "Old Bloke" it's a diaphragm call from MFK in the States. Haven't had it long and am still learning - took ages to get the order processed and sent.

Shows promise and is a different tool and sound to use.

Photo says it all pretty well.

Will keep you posted Old bloke and thanks for the interest.
