From the back I hear, with the same excited voice, that I get when I go shooting - "did you bring your gun daddy?"

I'm afraid not very practical as the SF is about a 45 minute drive away. And the other is over an hour. I usually go for a few hours so guess I could leave a bait when I arrive and return later once I find a spot.

Feral cats are almost no challenge. You can be upwind and get scented and they don't bolt. Half the time they just look at you waiting to be shot or walk slowly away. They are a sight and sound based hunter and usually pretty confident and curious, usually their downfall unless some one else has had a crack at moggy and missed giving the bugger an education.

Well, "HappyHunter", meet "unhappy Trapper"!

I've got a feral cat that's got Champagne tastes. It just won't go into the trap but just sits at the front and watches. I've put out a tin of teases - chopped up snags, mince and Salmon to get it used to feeding at the trap entrance etc but no, wont go in. Gourmet Tom, will pick out the Salmon tail and leave it to one side but eat the snags and mince, then pick up the empty tin, drink the water from the bowl and wander off. With the ants around here, I put the food tin into a bowl of water.
Any suggestions?

Maybe,.. make the placement of the bait into the cage progressive. I'd just move the receptacle 1/2 diameter at a time, allow 3-4 times before next move...rather than just outside/inside...

Its probably the smell of the trap mate...

A stretch i know, but if possible, clean the trap, shoot another cat & wipe the trap down with the dead cat using its glands around mouth/side of face & its rear end...

If not, try a cat attractant like they use on toy mice etc on a toy mouse or bird hanging from the inside on the trap latch.

Use a trail cam to find what its schedule is & just be there early to shoot the fukr...!!

I killed one a couple days ago in the ANP whilst stalking into a gully I almost stood on the bloody thing and it ran about 10m onto a log and looked back at me long enough to ensure it was its final mistake.
And yes I know you are only meant to shoot deer up there...I shot a dog too on the trip so have at it.

Sorry mate no pics never even thought of it and the cat wasnt overly photogenic copping a 300wm at 15m. Come to think of it I've only taken one deer photo this year too because it was my first fallow but the rest were small does so I let the freezer do the talking :drinks:
The cat was normal sized and pitch black, had a small grey kitten with it which is probably why it stopped, the kitten was at my feet hissing when I shot its mum, strange experience.
The dog was pretty big orange with white tinges, sorta dingo looking shot at the edge of this swamp...I was perched up high in cover and watched it come in following my tracks from the morming, also stranged experience watching it sniffing the ground I had walked tracking me down

Put the trap out last night with fresh rump steak and a scented lure too. Got Mr. Tom Cat really interested. Actually went up and just in the trap entrance.......

Had the camera on another path, shows it's a pussy highway out there! I thought I was only dealing with one but 4 showed up. More pussys in the yard than at Kings Cross!

Yep, still at it and Mr F. Cat is now starting to go into trap but only just and had to get a bigger trap. This sounds a bit like Jaws 'cause this cat is huge.

In the last fortnight I've had another 3 ferals show up on camera. The cats must have a roster system with each working different shifts 'cause there are no chance meetings or fights.
Stix, you might need a bigger pickle bucket too.

Cause they're big RJ you've been feeding them up mate no wonder you had to get a bigger trap  :sarcasm:
Yeah mate they probably won't all come in together because they're all male of all female as they don't intrude
into each others space or even they're from the same litter but now loners
If you tan their hides and they're too big for a hat you might get a good rug for the lounge room floor especially if they are
multi coloured

This may sound silly, but has worked for me with some very overly cautious feral felines. Wet a rag with bleach, or ammonia based cleaning agent then let dry, place in trap instead of bait.

Thanks Trekin, Will give it a go tonight. With all this feeding it's becoming a strain on the budget.

There are a few big toms and the odd Queen.

The challenge is shooting is not an option, BUGGER!

Yeah, have simular problem here, middle of our village, living next door to a house belonging to crazy cat people (who don't actually live there, but let all the stays, ferrals and domestic cats have the run of the place). Anywhere up to five litters going at any one time, and the stink on a hot summers day. Council not wanting to get involved, although the Mayor wants to put a bounty on ferral cats across the region, but the council keep voting it down. Trapped over thirty this year, just the wiley ones left now, but they seem to falling to the bleach trick nicely.

Don't know the exact science behind it, but some say it does. But after living next door to the feline shangrla hell hole, I'd rather stick me beak in a bottle a pharma grade ammonia, which is what cat piss is mostly made up of. But 9 out of 10 cats go apesh@t over the smell. If you have a domestic cat at home, put a drop of watered down bleach/ ammonia based cleaner on your hand and watch it go to town licking and rubbing your hand.

Time for a nationwide bounty system

For every square kilometre in this 'pristine' region of Australia, there is a feral cat

Speaking of Quolls, some years back(~2007 or so) I had a mate tell me about a research project conducted somewhere down around Warwick (QLD).

Two paddocks were used which contained a known population of quoll.
One was not baited for fox the other was(Fox-specific 1080 Poison baits).

In the unbaited paddock it was estimated that 25 quoll had been lost to fox predation.

In the baited paddock 3 quoll were lost to 1080, one was dissected and found to have eaten in excess of 10 baits.
It would appear gluttony is not only a sin in the human realm.

Of interest was in addition to those taken by 1080 a further 10 quolls in the baited padock had been killed in fights with other quolls.
Obviously a fox-free quoll is not a happy quoll.

Cranky little buggers!

this idea I keep seeing come up that feral cats are "generations away" or "so different" or "so far from being" domestic cats is a complete misnomer a cat is a cat. They ALL hunt and they ALL do it for not just food but fun. There is no difference between a feral cat and a roaming domestic cat.
