I think gwion is one the money.

I also firmly believe that you want a pet, contain it to your property. End of story, no whinging, your pet, your property, if it leaves your property, I'm more than happy for it to be shot/run over

When I moved in here 18 months ago, I reckon there was about 2 dozen or more, some feral and some pets. All off to the RSPCA

Could use the .22 with subs, a little risky i think :silent:

Good advice Sam, forget the .22, those new air rifles look pretty handy  seriously , it's not a good idea to discharge any firearm in suburbia, trapping and handing over to the council or RSPCA or similar is the right thing to do. I live on a nature reserve so 50grs administered at 3000ft/sec works for me.

Haha...

Ok. So maybe not most, nut many. Most urban areas that share boundaries with state and national parks especially.

Cats are declared pest in Tas.

Dont know about other states but I Victoria its councils (not all obviously) that require they be inside at night and on owners property. So its not well policed. Just a paper tiger.

HEY ! That's my cat !!!

I've been looking for little 'Cha Cha' for ages.

Is she O.K. ?

When can I come pick her up ?

Please look after her until my arrival.

( she likes a tickle under her chin and a cheesy treat )

EDIT: What did you do with her collar ?

Went to a property last week near gympie qld the old fella who owns it gave us a run down on the place before shooting,he told us that in a certain area he often see's big black cats like puma size animals and often finds roos with the heads taken off scrathes up trees bigish paw prints in the mud had a bit of fright he reckons when he suprised one in the thick scrub so he goes tooled up "with a short barrel firearm" whenever on that part of the property spoke to a couple of other mates who have been there and they shot stuff only to go back next day to see heads missing? Anyone seen any "big cats" out there?.22 in the swag for a few nights ha ha

That's an interesting question - and not just cats, but dogs as well...

If there are dogs on your property - especially if there have been attacks on livestock I was always under the impression that it was legally fine to shoot them. (Not that I have, or have needed to). I'm not 100% sure, but I imagine cats would fall under a similar ruling (whatever it might be).

But after your question, and especially the bit about them not being considered pests - I have no idea where this legally falls under in state parks - especially if the animal belongs to someone else (domesticated dog or cat).

Went to the local SF the other day. Had a walk and a bit of a whistle for foxes but nothing showed.
But on two separate locations about Km apart I could smell cats pee. This often happens but I never see the buggers and they won't come into the whistle. I look up trees too but don't see them. What's the secret?

My oldest been learning about foxes in school and on a road trip, I was explaining to him what a feral cat is, how it's more or less the same as a fox, what he learned in school...

Driving through Philip Island caravan park, cat walks across the road. I try to accelerate, wifey tells me off (being in a caravan park and all), the cat runs off...

From the back I hear, with the same excited voice, that I get when I go shooting - "did you bring your gun daddy?"

f***ing proud father moment right there.

National declaration: feral cats as pests

At the Meeting of Environment Ministers (Melbourne, 15 July 2015), Ministers endorsed the National declaration of feral cats as pests . As part of this declaration, Ministers agreed to review arrangements within their respective jurisdictions and, where necessary, to remove unnecessary barriers to effective and humane control of feral cats. Ministers also agreed to consider feral cat management as a priority in threatened species recovery programs, and to pursue the development of a national best practice approach to the keeping of domestic cats.

I'm afraid not very practical as the SF is about a 45 minute drive away. And the other is over an hour. I usually go for a few hours so guess I could leave a bait when I arrive and return later once I find a spot.

Feral cats are almost no challenge. You can be upwind and get scented and they don't bolt. Half the time they just look at you waiting to be shot or walk slowly away. They are a sight and sound based hunter and usually pretty confident and curious, usually their downfall unless some one else has had a crack at moggy and missed giving the bugger an education.

Well, "HappyHunter", meet "unhappy Trapper"!

I've got a feral cat that's got Champagne tastes. It just won't go into the trap but just sits at the front and watches. I've put out a tin of teases - chopped up snags, mince and Salmon to get it used to feeding at the trap entrance etc but no, wont go in. Gourmet Tom, will pick out the Salmon tail and leave it to one side but eat the snags and mince, then pick up the empty tin, drink the water from the bowl and wander off. With the ants around here, I put the food tin into a bowl of water.
Any suggestions?

Maybe,.. make the placement of the bait into the cage progressive. I'd just move the receptacle 1/2 diameter at a time, allow 3-4 times before next move...rather than just outside/inside...

Its probably the smell of the trap mate...

A stretch i know, but if possible, clean the trap, shoot another cat & wipe the trap down with the dead cat using its glands around mouth/side of face & its rear end...

If not, try a cat attractant like they use on toy mice etc on a toy mouse or bird hanging from the inside on the trap latch.

Use a trail cam to find what its schedule is & just be there early to shoot the fukr...!!

I killed one a couple days ago in the ANP whilst stalking into a gully I almost stood on the bloody thing and it ran about 10m onto a log and looked back at me long enough to ensure it was its final mistake.
And yes I know you are only meant to shoot deer up there...I shot a dog too on the trip so have at it.

Sorry mate no pics never even thought of it and the cat wasnt overly photogenic copping a 300wm at 15m. Come to think of it I've only taken one deer photo this year too because it was my first fallow but the rest were small does so I let the freezer do the talking :drinks:
The cat was normal sized and pitch black, had a small grey kitten with it which is probably why it stopped, the kitten was at my feet hissing when I shot its mum, strange experience.
The dog was pretty big orange with white tinges, sorta dingo looking shot at the edge of this swamp...I was perched up high in cover and watched it come in following my tracks from the morming, also stranged experience watching it sniffing the ground I had walked tracking me down
