I have used one of these for many years and found them to be really good. Have the deer slayer version too but don't use it anywhere near as much.

Serves me well.

As an over the counter knife, I am big fan of CRKT and I have a few of them. They are well made, hold their edges very well and don't cost a fortune. That being said, my go to knives are always my custom hand crafed knives.

Esee, flat grind for strength when glancing off bone, can get small ones, carbon steel so sharp and easy to sharpen and good sheath systems but the edge will rust slightly being 1095 carbon steel, the rest is coated in an epoxy or something, i've smashed mine through trees and all sorrs and 90% is still on it, fallkniven are good to for cold weather stuff, also Brkt but then your talking big $

Be careful buying Shrade-Old Timers nowadays. They are now made in China and the quality is not good. Same can be said for Gerber. Anything with Bear Grylls' name on it should be avoided. The old U.S made ones, both brands, were excellent and I still have and use mine regularly. There are some reasonably priced, good quality knives to be had at the moment, a short time spent on Evil-bay will make your head spin. I've picked up a couple of U.S made ones that seem pretty good so far and I only paid about $80 each. Locally I've found a line of Spanish made knives that have some good usable designs and they take and hold an edge well. I believe most gun shops stock them as they are imported by Nioa I think, don't quote me on that. :unknown:

Not made in the US anymore  that's a real shame, mine are USA made. If you can find a USA one second hand, you wont be disappointed.

Just bought a Buck 113 from the states. Haven't used it, it hasn't even arrived yet - should be coming any day though. Reviews all were positive and the price was fair - roughly $100-$120 to my door from memory.

What are you specifically after? The knife market is full of rubbish over priced crap. If all you want is reliable quality look at the Mora range. If you want something special but reasonably priced check out AKC in tassie (Australian knife club). Everything they sell is quality and they are honest about what they sell.

If you have an original USA made old timer it's probably worth a few bob. I'd be hanging on to it ;)

Doh, I had three of the skinners one got stolen  and I recently gave one to a young hunter I met out bush that was trying to use a cheep $20 survival knife thing  Oh well hope he treasures it and gets a lifetime of service out of it. :) You on here young fella ?

Still got one left and the deer slayer that has been modified to add the gutt hook

Here is a pic of the gut hook mod on the slayer and a knife I'm making based on the skinner to fill the sheath that wasn't stolen with it..

Have you considered making your own Pete1 ? It's not as hard as some think, this one is still pretty rough but should come up nice when it's finished. May give it an antler grip ? If you use suitable carbon steel they will hold a good edge. 440 is pretty good in stainless too. Can get some decent blanks if you look around online too.

Personally I carry a small fixed blade, about 100mm Buck on my side, it's good enough for cutting the heads of joeys.

In the vehicle I keep a very sharp victorinox Fibrox boning knife for bleeding, skinning and butchering, its a good all rounder.

When I'm out for rabbits it's the 96OT Old Timer
You can still get the occasional original US made ones, they have carbon steel blades, the new Chinese ones are stainless.

I generally don't need anything big for what I'm doing but I've got a nice ka-bar for those times I might need something bigger. It's a solid knife, high carbon steel so it will sharpen up like a razor and keeps it's edge.

I use a Kizlyar Terek with gut hook for skinning and have a nice little Helle for removing meat. Both great knives.

Then just a cheap $50 ebay job for pig sticking so I won't cry when it gets trashed.

SOG make some good stuff, I have an older Tomcat folding knife and a powerlock multitool. The higher end stuff is Japanese and American, their budget lines are Taiwanese

SOG (specialist outdoor gear), Benchmade, Buck...(all US)... Svord....(NZ)... Anything that says made in Finland on it.....,.(well, almost)

When you say hunting knife it is a very open topic. I assume you mean an all rounder. Knives can get expensive and honestly don't need to for a work horse tool. Depends if you want a life time piece of kit or just something that will work. Do you want a signature piece of craftsmanship or a good sturdy throw about jobbie. You need to decide this for yourself and buy accordingly.

Here's a few i've been working on lately.
The one with a temporary rope handle i used to cut through a 11 month old lambs hip bone and brisket on the weekend. A quick run over the steel and she is shaving sharp still.

Others for various purposes and some just because it seemed like a good idea. Got to fit scales and baulsters in the next few weeks but have been hell busy lately, so no time for hobby knife making.

I wouldn't waste my money on a "Hunting" knife, a good ol butchers boning knife does a great job and costs around $20, I use one to skin foxes etc and it's by far the best knife I've used for skinning/boning work, I could buy 10 of em for what it costs for some of these "Hunting" knives which half the time are f***ing useless for the purpose anyway.

Exactly my point re: not needing to cost much for a knife to do the job, Bigfella. Only thing is, some like knives for the sake of the knife & that's when things get expensive!

That's me  I've got quite a few "Hunting" Knives and honestly the majority of em are useless for it, much prefer the $20 job I buy from the butchers, keeps a good edge, easy to sharpen and gets the job done no fuss at all (I mean if the butcher uses em all day long every day how bad can they be for butchering things hey. :D
