Feral Grunter opinions ?

Post by Die Judicii » 08 Jul 2016, 10:43 pm

What say the masses on the following ?

In which order of excellence are the 3 senses of feral grunters ? ie: Sight, Smell, Hearing.

I googled, and could only find a majority opinion from the "Septic Tanks" on "hogs".
Whether they are one and the same to our ferals, I don't know,,,,,,, but I want Aussie opinions.

I'm going to take a educated guess.

Smell best, closley followed by hearing and sight being their least of the 3

Why ?

Because they are known for a keen nose ... can sniff out a truffle a foot 6" under snow. Massive nose with big nostrils.
Always smelling things, they put their noses up in the air for a good smell regularly.

Their ears are big, upright and they can move them like satellite dishes. All good design for Exelent hearing.

Eyes are relatively small, Generally look like piss holes in the snow (poor condition)
Being a short animal that walks with it's head held low it's never going to see far especially in scrub or bushy areas.

When l was young and stupid, me and my 32 win would crawl into the lantana following the tunnels made by the porkers.
If the wind changed to behind me they would go.
If l broke a twig within 50 m they would heads up and move off looking around.
I could get up to 20 m and if dead still they could be looking at me but seeing no threat.
Heads down again then l would shoot.

Foxes primary sense is smell, followed by hearing then vision. If you are wondering how they see color, compared to the seven colors humans see in a rainbow a fox can only see in yellow, white and blue. Fox vision is evolved to detect movement and function in low light conditions (dawn and dusk) but it is not very acute so they have trouble seeing detail at longer distance compared to human vision.

Has anyone got a list of what different animals can or can't see. Goats for example cannot see an orange blaze cap, they only see it as grey apparently.

A recent study conducted by some Japanese Councils seemed to prove that crows cannot see a particular shade of yellow.
Thus, plastic garbage bags recommended by those councils are manufactured in that particular yellow, with the end result being that the overall
number of bags being ripped open by crows at the dumps has decreased dramatically.

As for your list,,,,,,,, "No idea" can't see at all. (No eye Deer)

This is my understanding of their sight. Deer, foxes & dogs are the same. Note, I also understand they see blue very well and most of the other colours they see in variations of white, blacks and greys. So I think avoid UV, blue and movement is the message. Having said that Im no expert.

I would say smell and hearing are top in basically any prey/game animal.
