Hunting around Buchan/Orbost, Victoria?

Post by bladeracer » 20 Aug 2016, 5:42 pm

I'm now a SSAA member (also ADA and F&G) and wanting to do some shooting at the range they're building at Buchan. Since it's a five-hour round trip, I've been studying the maps of the area to see if I can make it into a proper camping/hunting adventure every month.
Between Orbost and Buchan there is a 20km+ wide stretch of deer hunting habitat.
It'd be awesome if I could spend a day at the range, then wander into the bush, and have my girlfriend pick me up near Orbost several days later.
I've studied historical weather records, the area is actually slightly warmer and significantly drier than where we live during August September, and the altitude is roughly the same as home, although it runs down to near sea level at Orbost township.

So, has anybody hunted that area?
There are very few roads or tracks that I can see so I'm hoping it's too remote for 4X4's and dirtbikes.
Is it worth the trek?
Is there a better place to spend some time in that area?
Anybody what hunting is in there, pigs, goats, rabbits, foxes, dogs, cats, deer?

There is great Sambar hunting all around there. Used to go out from Club Terrace, always good. You will find loggers, 4x4, greenies etc but it is generally nice hunting. Have a beer at the Bellbird while your in the neighbourhood,

Thanks No1Mk3 :-)
Just sambar or is there other stuff as well?
I'd be hoping to concentrate on pest species for a couple days and then perhaps take a deer on the final day. Rabbits would be particularly handy for eating :-)

According to our State illustrious regulations you are not allowed to hunt pests in deer habitat, so be aware - you cannot touch those rabbits and foxes.

Please link the documentation where this is listed... You can shoot pest animals anywhere in Vic where you are allowed to hunt Deer and even areas categorized where deer hunting is not permitted (i.e. Sanctuaries).

Edit:
Looks like you are correct regarding Game Reserves:

http://www.gma.vic.gov.au/hunting/deer/where-to-hunt wrote:State Game Reserves
Game species may be hunted, but only during the open season. Sixteen State Game Reserves are available for quail hunting and six for Hog Deer hunting. Pest animals may not be hunted at any time, unless specifically authorised by DELWP.

You can't shoot pests in state game reserves and national parks where deer hunting is permitted. Not deer habitat. You just can't spotlight in deer habitat.

Be careful young buck. The laws are confusing and often do not make sense.
If I recall correctly, IF:
You cant shoot vermin etc in
Game reserves
State parks
National parks
Santuaries.
And most of the above are closed to hunting most or ALL of the year. With the odd exception.

You cant spotlight in,
All of the above &
Recognised deer habitat, and this is often SF.
Or near or on public roads & public places eg near town , houses.

For I think all SF and private property (with permission) you can hunt deer and vermin.

You need the correct caliber for deer species and a game licence.

For sambar the rut peak is about may to august.but can be outside those months.

Go to the gma web site and have a good look around. http://www.gma.vic.gov.au

Dont loose your firearms because you didnt do your homework.

Having said that I may be corrected on some of the above.

That's not correct at all.
But there are some places where you can hunt deer or ducks only, and are not allowed to shoot ferals.
With the National Park culls we're not allowed to hunt anything except the species we're ticketed for.

If you're only hunting deer then just get your game licence and hunt them in deer hunting habitat.
It only gets confusing if you want to hunt all available species in an area. Deer hunting area boundaries don't always follow the state forest boundaries.

Just doesn't make sense to me that I can't shoot a fox in some areas that I can shoot deer.

I think I'll have to find a local to hunt with before I head over. Might be easier and I sure as hell don't wanna get into strife over a bit of confusion

It doesn't make sense to any of us either :-)
The only deer you can't shoot is hog deer. There are so many of them that there are balloted hog deer culls in National Parks...but in the bush they're still restricted to being "in season". Hog deer are only shootable during April but you can only take one male and one female.
To hunt any deer or ducks (or quail, pheasant or partridge) you need a game licence. There is no licence required for hunting ferals.
