If you're looking to do a bit of Deer hunting too, what about a 270? Just a tad heavy on foxes but what the hell, pelts are worth nix.

Was reading that too. I know they need a long term solution, but this sort of thing inspires me to take a week off work to go setup camp and help shoot some of the buggers for those farmers.

Yeah Oldbloke you see those pics and they are the whole reason I hunt wild dogs
Seeing a picture of those sheep is one thing standing beside one suffering is a total different ball game it not only
breaks your heart it also breaks the farmers not to mention the poor animals
Wild dogs world wide along with Hyenas are the cruelest killers around they consume part of their catch whilst it is alive
where most other meat eaters choke their victims and the kill is quicker
In saying that the wild pig is not far behind the dogs it is common for them to eat live animals even stay with a cow
until it claves then snatch the calf from under the mother

As far as what caliber for dogs well I use 22-250 but I think any caliber larger than .22 would do I think
what calibers is like beer it all depends on what you like :drinks:

G'day Roginajack , Yes mate that sounds nice BEER, STEAK , SLEEP and in that order at my age
Mate I don't know how many times I have heard the question of what caliber shoots what
Its like asking what weight hammer to knock in a 2'' nail
But hey that's what this forum is for so lets not burst its bubble
I like both the 243 and the 22-250 but anything flat and fast your on a winner
But in saying that you get hit by any other large caliber your just as dead
As you know you shoot dogs it's what works for you in what country you shoot
and what purpose ie shooting dogs in traps

Mmmm,, my conclusion is anything from 222 and up. But due to size 55grain to 140grain projectiles and the heavier bullets should be soft or HPs rather than hard.

Depends who you ask OB...
I ran into a bloke today & had a brief-ish conversation about shooting...
He quickly turned the conversation into one of those "cartridge for certain game" dictatorships...

Apparently a "204 is nothing"--so upon showing the results on bunnies n foxes, he commented i should be using a "decent round like 7-08"...!!! :o   (my face did exactly this)

Then i said i have one of those but added that i used that for "bigger game like goats"...to which he didnt like my vhoice of projectile--(a light weight expanding proj that shoots in my rifle for goats)...
He suggested i should be using a min of a 160gn'r on goats--i told him goats are small & soft & are NOT red deer...but that didnt prevent him telling me how good he was...
By this point id got the vibe of this fellow--so asked him what he uses on goats &/or what he hunts... (wait for it...)...
Shoots a bit of .22lr & air rifle occasionally at a range...never hunted in his life...
He followed me around & continued to insist i take his advice...
It was funny at first, but soon became pretty annoying as he talked over the top of me...!!!

Normally i invite people out to the club for a shoot...but i told this fellow i dont shoot in any clubs...

Most of the dogs we shoot, are from a .223; running either 55gn Nosler BT, Nosler Vamagedden, or Hornady V-Max.
All seem to do the job very well.

Distance-wise; out to around 150 metres.

Beyond that, I'd probably go for something heavier. A .243 running 87Gn V-Max pills would do the job nicely.
A dog isnt anywhere near as heavily built as a pig, and we have rolled a LOT of pigs with 87 V-max pills in the past.

Cheers,

Rod.

I use a standard Tikka 223 to shoot 80 Bergers which will group under three inches at 500m. The barrel has 1:8 twist.

I use a 22/250 with 55 grain Vmax which knocks down foxes at 400, I am sure it would be equally effective on wild dogs at that distance.

Yes SCJ429 the 22-250 with 55gr vmax will do fine that's all I use and have done for years it knocks them down easily
If I haven't got the22- 250 I use the 7mm rem both do quiet well on dogs
And before the 7mm I had a 25-06 another capable dog gun

Yeah Oldbloke he seems to know a fair bit about hunting also a hard life as well
I could vision what he said about dog hunting as that's the way it is, no frills and long hours sitting for naught
then you have good days and knock a few over
That $ 25 a dog his mate said sounds ok but understand why they don't collect although $25 is better than nothing :)
I get absolutely nothing for my skins so I don't bother with them
The only thing that changes with wild dog hunting is the change in country and some people have their own little traits
that work :D

Thanks Oldbloke

I really love my Brno fox 22K hornet with double set triggers it’s extremely effective on foxes and dogs out to the 150 mark very cheap to load leaves little skin damage not as sensitive to wind as a .17 all in all great gun if your chasing skins which is not really common now days but I still keep the better skins my self.
If you just want to kill them can’t go past a .243 very effective on longer ranges you will never look back in my opinion
My favs
.22lr Brno
.22 gamo cfx air rifle
.22 Brno K hornet
.303/22 sprinter
.243 tikka
6.6x55 Swede
.270 tikka
.300 win mag sako
12g beretta

No real life experience here. But from what I gather 22 Hornet is considered minimum. From there anything up to a 45-70. Lol Nothing wrong with being a little over gunned. Personally , if I get a crack at one it will be either 223 or 30-06. Because thats what I have.

When all this virus stuff has settled down I hope to get out.
