Hunting and face cammo

Post by juststarting » 26 May 2017, 11:48 pm

I was hunting with few people a while back and as we were standing at the bottom of the hill, waiting for one more person to come down before we headed back, I've noticed the guy walking down hill and the sun must have hit him just at the right angle... His hands looked like they were glowing. I am guessing it's the combination of sweat, his angle heading down hill and angle of the light. Anyway, it was definitely noticeable from 100+ meters away.

Then I thought, wow, face is way more exposed than hands. though his mug wasn't glowing, just the hands. I wear something similar to this (a lot thinner though) - http://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/221363553 ... -l1000.jpg, only because my face gets gold. I usually take it off within an hour or so.

That made me think, do you guys wear a face mask or some sort of mash face veil, etc. throughout your hunt?

I am guessing wearing a cap or hat (http://www.sofmilitary.co.uk/products/D ... t%2001.JPG) would deflect the sun from too much reflection, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Does anyone actually wear cammo paint?

Cam cream and skrim if you really want to get all sneaky n' s**t or one of those fully sick thin hunting face vails

If your out there for long enough the dirt and grit helps top

Disclaimer: i've never worn cam paint hunting and never will that s**t hurts like a bitch once it sweats in your eyes and if you get the potent tropical stuff it can melt plastic gear  so just imagine what its done to your face and it's just full tacticool

DIY face mask with hat and gloves. But you can use a burnt cork or charcoal as face paint.

What's the point if you're rifle hunting ? I don't even wear camo bow hunting anymore. Unless I'm after deer with the bow. Those sneaky bastards would probably still bust me even if I had the camo from predator !
That being said, its well known that human skin is very easily seen. A lot of bow hunters will pay more attention to covering their face and hands than trying to wear the best camo clothes.
Mind you,a very good hunter once said to me,if the game can't see you,it doesn't matter what camo you wear.......

OK, so at the risk of being laughed off the forum with derision, has anyone used something like this? Looks like it would have some camo effect and also keep the bugs off the face.

I would never admit to it, but I know "someone" who used to wear one of the when working with cattle. "He" was the only one not doing the great aussie wave all the time.

I'm with Bigpete. Cam is not really needed and is for big kids. If wanna be a big kid and wear it, fine by me. It's more important to keep in cover and only move when whatever you are hunting is not looking at you. Break up your outline and never stand fully erect; the shape of the human form spooks a lot of animals just as much as the shape of a snake spooks us. For this reason a floppy hat is better than a cap. Wearing muted tones in similar colours to the surrounding is camouflage enough.

We grew up living in these things in Tennant Creek :-)
I carry two with me, but I only wear it when the bugs are bad, and sometimes here they can blot out the sun. Waving at flies and mozzies will give you away regardless of how good your camo is.

I use one but only for keeping flies etc off, not for camo. I only use a bit of camo these days. I don't have access to deer, but have had goats walk up to within less than 3m of me on several occasions whilst wearing work clothes just by keeping the wind in my face, movement to an absolute minimum and not looking directly at the animals.

"not looking directly at the animals."

Now that's a good point. Humans have front facing predator eyes.

This is gonna sound creepy but I'm fair skinned, blond and delicate, see told you and I wear gloves, hat and a camo net covering my face when calling feral dogs, foxes and cats.

If you want to check how conspicuous you are in the bush, get someone to take a black and white photo of you in your hunting gear, you might be surprised at the result. How your face, arms legs AND rifle stand out.
Oh, and I like long walks in the bush and moonlight nights too, (sigh!)

They ate somehow. Realistically its just about increasing your odds though isn't it? I know heaps of game gets taken by guys wearing nothing more than jeans and an old flannel shirt but tilting the odds in your favour can't hurt - even if its not strictly necessary. Speaking for myself, most of my gear is camo. Which I then screw up by wearing both a blaze top and a blaze cap because I'm paranoid.

Apologies if someone posted this already - I know I saw it on a forum but I can't remember if it was here. But anyways - the real downside to making yourself invisible: https://youtu.be/8A8aWRvece8?t=2m

I wear a shemagh when its cooler, covers and breaks the face up really well. My only concern is a proud right nationalist might see me in the bush and bag me thinking they're doing the country a favour. Also great in winter when riding in the back of a ute.

I don't give a rats back end how good your camo is. Once the wind is blowing towards your game, or you bump something by accident or you move when game is looking towards you, your busted. Spending time on the basics is 10,000 x more important than spending money on the peripheral stuff like camo.
