Hi all,
New to hunting will be doing my r licence soon. Looking at the dpi website it looks like you need a gps for hunting state forrests,
What would anyone recommend? Don't really want to spend a fortune.
Any other gear necessary for hunting state forrests I should know about

Hey Gizo, you need a minimum of a Garmin Etrex 20. You need to a GPS with a SD card to upload maps.

You can use an iphone, DPI provide files that work on google maps format. Downside is, they eat battery power when using GPS. I use a Garmin 64 but I wouldn't really recommend it. Screen works badly for the DPI colour coding.

Tip for battery saving on smart phone, turn on flight mode ,gps still works fine without your phone looking for service all the time chewing the battery

Yes been using iPhone.
Download avenza maps free.
Then download the forest map in pdf to your Dropbox.
Open avenza on iPhone and add map from Dropbox.Done easy.
Iphones have a built in gps no need for 3G or 4G.Good batt on iPhone 5,6
In privacy just turn on your location setting, works really good.
Cheers,

How exactly?

Doesn't differentiate the shades of colour well enough?

Pretty much. I'm not sure whether the fault lies with Garmin, the DPI or I just have my settings wrong. Last year the map showed very very pale green vs very, very pale pink for go/no go zones. I just downloaded the 2017 Q3 DPI overlay. Looking at one of the forests I usually go to, I see that the campground areas are marked very very dark blue, whereas the huntable areas are black. None of this is good when you're trying to read it in sunlight.

I'm a Victorian so not a R license holder, but for the vic gma maps just printed them off at officeworks on waterproof non tear paper and use that as well as a normal paper map to ensure i'm legal
