What do you take with you on short hunting trips?

Game hunting and large prey. Deer stalking, hunting with hounds. Boar, pigs etc., large prey, culling, hunting large feral animals.

What do you take with you on short hunting trips?

Post by Michael64 » 26 Aug 2017, 5:05 am

G'day,

I usually just take my rifle and knife when I go hunting. What else should I take with me on a single hunting day trip? ie, no camping.

The closest to camo I wear would be a green flannie it's not really needed for pigs. Some of the deer hunters will be able to point ya in the right direction when they wake up

At a minimum i have a map of where i'm shooting/likely to wander into, a proper gsw first aid kit, torniquet/chest seal/quik clot etc, knife, extra rounds say 10 ish, learnt to bring a bore snake one day when i stabbed my gat into the ground lol, was using sticks all day trying to get the mud out, range finder and cold weather gear if it's a bit nasty, and i usually try to squeeze in a museli bar or 3 if space permits

Toilet paper. Everyone seems to forget tp.

Just put some electrical take over the muzzle.

Everything else is highly dependent on terrain and game you're going after.

As for first aid, always, but keep it realistic. Going solo and far from help, you probably want to consider a PLB.

Short hunting trips can quickly turn into long hunting trips if you dont think of what could go wrong , never go without gps , plb , compass and uhf, even if you think you know the area

As luck would have it, or lack of, my bag was soaked in blood, so I had to unpack...

Here you go...

After lunch, I always carry headlamp and spare 18650 battery.

If alone, I have a radio and Garmin GPS, if in a group, then Rino650.

My non-overnight hunting backpack includes:
- Water (bottle at the moment, will be buying a camel pack soon)
- 2 x knives
- 3 x different whistles
- Allen keys that fit my rifle bolts and scope ring screws (you are fked if a ring comes loose while out there)
- Multi-tool (fold-out pliers type)
- Traditional compass
- Fully charged phone with offline Google map pre-downloaded
- Binos
- Range finder
- First aid kit
- latex gloves (for scalping)
- snap lock bags (for scalps)
- lighter
- flint lighter
- small LED torch
- 5-10 extra rounds
- Handheld UHF
- small micro fiber cloth (for cleaning dirty lens when needed)
- Firearm license (wallet usually stays in the car)
- Husky waterproof jacket (weather pending, non-padded scrunch up type that ends up being only slightly larger than a can of soft drink)
- Water proof gun sock (weather pending)
- Gloves (for warmth in winter only)
- Enough food the day
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

That's it. Gotta check the lip stick too

Speak of the devil. The rocky horror show was on TV tonight.

No, signal mirror in case I get lost. An old one out of the budgie cage. But only take it if in rough or new territory. It looks like a lot but weighs bugger all.
