Shooting rests and sticks

Post by Oldbloke » 27 Aug 2017, 12:20 pm

So, I use shooting sticks some times and am looking at alternatives. I'm not keen on bi-pods because they add weight to the rifle. What do hunters use out in the field? I'm not interested in ranges. Here are some examples of what is out there including my DIY folding set. What else is out there?
As a side note, whats available for prone in the field? Seems bi-pods & packs are the only options.

$40 us + delivery + $10 for the pouch. So I guess about $80 by the time it arrives.

The bipod shooting sticks cost me about $80 by the time they landed. So far they seem to hold up all right.
Off the belt they're not as stable as using them on the ground but being a scrawny guy they help out a fair bit.

I've tried shooting sticks - they don't do it for me I'm much happier with my bipod or sandbags - more stable for me.

But I gather 90% of your shooting is from the ute ?

Yes and no just depends on what I'm doing and whether I'm out calling foxes or spotlighting em from the ute. I found the sticks we were using useless due to too much movement from me and taking long shots 200-300m impossible to do with them (just way too much movement to be successful at those ranges) I find the sandbag on the bonnet or my bipods more suited for that sort of thing.

Don't waste your money on those Mono Pod things they are bloody useless IMHO, way too unstable to use accurately (be fine for elephants and buffs etc) :D I think the tripod types would be the most stable (can't remember if I've tried one of them or not but the bipod types didn't suit me (standing up) way too much movement for my liking) but sitting on the ground resting up against a tree they should be a lot better I would imagine but for me in those types of situations I'd just stick with the bipod attached to my rifle, it's quick and easy to set up and I know I can shoot well of it at longer ranges.
