New zealand vs. Tasmania

Post by bear foot bowhunter » 22 Nov 2017, 8:39 am

Hi bit of a theoretical question one of thos ones you day dream about when your mind wanders . if you had the opertuniy to move to ether NZ or tassy based purly on hunting qualit and quantity which would you pick . iv only been to tas and never hunted there and it seems like the place you would move if you wanted to fill your pantry with fresh produce and game but there seems to be a lot more hunting opertunitys in nz not to mention the gun laws :drinks:.

NZ. Game and weaponry availability. In Tasmania they take your guns if you paint them black.

NZ...
Not really anything to hunt in Tas. Wallabies, rabbits & hares don't count as far as I'm concerned and you have a max of 2 fallow deer each year and constricted to two very short seasons.

I lived in Tasmania for 5 years and have been to NZ on holidays three times. I'd move to NZ in a heart beat if the opportunity came up. Tasmania is great for lots of things but for hunting NZ wins hands down. Once the kids move out, there is more than an even chance I'll be off to NZ for a few years.

Me daughter lives in Tassie and I go there a fair bit BUT I'd choose N.Z., from what I can work out deer hunting in Tassie is a bit of a closed shop, fishing is good but so is N.Z.
Yep, New Zealand and can we all come visit you?

NZ fishing has it all over Tas, unless you are specifically talking about remote still water fly fishing for wild brown trout; then Tas wins; in all other fishing term, NZ is the shiz. Stream fishing for trout, rick fishing, beach fishing, inshore and offshore boat based fishing... the variety and qualiury and quantity of fishing is just awesome. Had we not just bought a place in Tas i would seriously have moved to NZ as soon as Abbott was elected.

I moved to NZ (Christchurch) 6 months ago due to work. And I'd agree with everyone else. It beats tassie hunting wise for sure.

I just sat my test and now am waiting to be contacted by the cops for their home visit, but hunting and shooting definitely doesn't have the stigma it does in Australia. There's full page advertisements for gun city in Fairfax newspapers here.

The availability of public land around chch is pretty awesome, but I've heard that to shoot rabbits you need a 'small game permit' and they rarely hand those out. So my best bet is to make friends with a farmer.

Strange, I always thought the Rabbits, along with possums were a declared feral pest and cats?

Oh god, New Zealand without even needing to think about it. You constantly hear people dribble total sh!t about Fallow Deer here like they are unicorns and highly prized. These same people also tote around ridiculous calibers such as 338 Win mag or higher (25 Caliber cartridges are best for fallow imo). The only game here that aren't overhyped are rabbits and wallabies, maybe quail and duck if you're into getting into your shirt buttons deep in mud.
If something doesn't work, apply rule .303!
