Something even more different.

Game hunting and large prey. Deer stalking, hunting with hounds. Boar, pigs etc., large prey, culling, hunting large feral animals.

Something even more different.

Just been down fishing with my atlatl for carp. In layman's terms,a spear and woomera. Got 9 but 3 got off. Still not a bad effort and a hell of a lot of fun

Nice one mate. No doubt it takes a bit of practice to get to that stage. Impressed.

Definitely a European thing. Dad generally goes fishing at least once a week, so there's that. I nibble on it when I'm over at their place, it's pretty good.

Great stuff big Pete. Now, if only we could create a broad market for carp in Australia (much bigger than the existing market) perhaps we could avoid the need for releasing another virus into the environment.......

Back on topic, nice goin' bigpete. You would have had a ball with me last week at Burrinjuck Dam. You could have nailed dozens of those things off the bow of the tinnie, they were everywhere. Really wishin' I had my bow instead of a fishing rod. ;)

this guy is great  :drinks: thanks for that

now back to carp
I admit when I was younger I did give it a crack and thought it tasted like fish, I like other fish better but I could eat it :unknown:
I have been told by a Maltese friend not that long ago that the trick is to have an ice slurry to put the fish into as you catch them to keep them cool
apparently this is the trick to making carp a nice fish to eat :unknown: he goes out of his way to catch carp as he recons they are a delicacy :drinks:
I dont care just as long as we are getting rid of them  :drinks:

Most people don't like carp because they taste mud in them. Some say that if you chuck it in a bath with fresh water, that goes away. Depends on the dish, unless you're just frying it, you won't be able to taste it. Personally, I could never taste mud in them regardless how they are cooked and I ate a lot of it... They do however have a lot of bones, which is what keeps me away from most fish (bad childhood experience). All in all, I'd bet that in a blind test, people who enjoy fish, would enjoy carp just as much.

If you want to take the muddy taste out of a fish gut it straight away and throw it in a ice slurry
when you get home put a roasting tray in the bottom of the fridge with the rack in it to keep the fillets off
the bottom of the tray, fillet the fish and skin the fillet , lay the fillet belly down on the rack in the tray
Leave in the fridge for three to four days empty any water from the tray daily there should be plenty
I've been doing this for years with fresh water mullet otherwise you couldn't eat them
The water that drains out of the fillet will stink of mud that's why you remove it daily
I've also done it with fresh water barra ( 4 DAYS IS BEST )

Cheers

Bigpete..fair dinkum what a cracker...!!!
Looks like a truck load of fun...!!
Good in ya...take me next time..!!!

I used to have access to a shack in Walker flat some 20-30 yrs ago, & i used to keep all the decent sized carp for a "wog" friend of the owner...
I believe they used to pickle them or something...

Id eat them...& agree with juststarting...most people would eat them if they didnt know they were "carp"...
Depends what you're raised (or peer pressured) to believe--lots of people wont eat rabbit due to believing its "an acquired taste"...

I like catching carp. I call it community service.

I hope the new national carp management plan works out ok.
